Odds on that'll be the RPM sensor. Just done one on my son's JTD. Costs £23 from a Fiat dealer & sits at the back of the engine up on the flywheel housing. Got to get at it from underneath - it should cost you an hour's labour if you don't do it yourself.
 
Hmmm - quick reply doesn't seem to reply to the message I responded to! The RPM sensor answer was to TIMG147

that isnt the rpm sensor, it is the crankshaft position sensor ;)

many people call it the rpm sensor but in reality the camshaft position sensor can be called the rpm sensor or phase sensor. the crankshaft position sensor can be called the tdc sensor or timing sensor. it is a very common mistake, which is why it is good practice to say crank or cam rather than rpm to avoid confusion.
