Hi all, I’ve searched the forum and web but couldn’t get to an answer.

Hoping someone knows what to torque a Panda 30 head without a head gasket? It’s on 500R/126 with Nanni 740cc barrels.

The honest answer is that the chances of you finding the cylinder-head torque for that head on that kit is----zilch! However, I have fitted a Panda30 head onto a 126 engine with an "ATHENA" 695 kit and done the following. The "Athena" instructions are for the head torque (like you, without a head-gasket) to be 31.4Nm, which seemed a bit low (lower than even a standard 500). So I have torqued my head down to 36 Nm, which is just a bit less that the normal 126 head torque (40 Nm), but more than the standard 500 head torque (33 Nm). What are you planning to use as a "liquid head-gasket"----I have used "wellseal", which has been succesfull on this engine and classic small marine engines that I have restored.

Thanks hobbler. Yeah it’s a bit of a specialised setup and there’s little info out there. I’ve never used a liquid gasket and have been losing compression. Last year whilst in Italy I bought a pair of gaskets, I I know you’re not meant to use them but I thought it can’t hurt. I fitted them the other week but then I had problems with the pushrod tubes not sealing so I’m ditching the head gasket and will take up your advice on wellseal. Is there a particular spec or do they only make one type, and do you have any recommendations on how to apply? Cheers

The full name for Wellseal is:---"Stag Wellseal Jointing Compound".There are a number of suppliers 'on-line' with prices ranging from £11 to £17, so hunt around. You willonly need the 100ml tube. You carefully clean both surfaces and then apply the liquid to both surfaces, allow the goo to go 'tacky', put the head on and torque it up---simples! I used this sealer on a classic smallmarine engine (J2 Kelvin a our canal-boat) which had thin steel 'head-gaskets' (so no give in them at all). Fitted the heads with the Wellseal and never had a problem---it is a goodproduct.
At the risk of teaching you "to suck eggs"---make sure that the barrels are of exactly the same height and that the 'gasket' surface of the head is good and smooth.

No problem, all advice gratefully received! I took the head to get checked and it did need a light skim, it was out by a few thou. Tbh for now I’m going to assume the barrels were accurately machined as a pair. Will order some Wellseal and I’m also awaiting a Panda 30 gasket/O-ring set ordered from Italy …. hope I get it all in time for the Brooklands event.
