I'm near Manchester but I'm going to give dartford tuning a ring to see whether they can help and if there is one nearer to me.

Cheers,

I've spoke to dartford tuning and when I'd told them what was happening they said it could be worn valves, badly adjusted hydraulic tappets (these have been replaced about 18 months ago and from what I can remember the fault may have started after that, or at least around the same time) or as John H said the water temperature sensor.

They gave me the number of the main Bosch dealer and I rang them for a local garage that specialises with all of this.

I hope that it is the coolant sensor and not the valves, however if it is the tappets not adjusted properly then that's not so bad as I'll have a look at them myself. The only thing stopping me replacing the temp sensor is not having the correct socket, a decent torque wrench and the ability to get these within the tight gap to undo it.

Cheers,
John

You could try just unplugging and re-connecting the lead to the sensor(s) first... You might find there's a little retaining clip which you need to squeeze near the end of the connector to release it.

If there's any crud in there clean it out as best you can - if there's been any trace of moisture related problems put a blob of vaseline in the connector female end before you reconnect. Oooh, Nurse! the screens !! :p

Pete will probably be able to say which connector for the Air temp on a 900 Cinq

Remember the legendary quality of Italian electrics [:)

Just to clarify the coolant sensor is mounted on top of the water pump? Or is it the one that is mounted near to the rocker cover, or is that one an oil level sensor?

Cheers,
John

The one by the rocker cover is a sort of overheating temp sensor.
You don't really need this one as i've unplugged it and used the hole for another sender unit for my temp guage and it works fine.

Cheers guys,

I had a look after I had posted and realised that the one mounted on the engine is just for the temperature and the one on top of the thermostat is the temp sensor. I've got another Cinquecento so I'm going to try and swap the one on that one and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks again, I'll let you know what happens.

Cheers,
John
