I know that using the air con lowers fuel consumption, normally by around 10%. My consumption however has gone from around mid 40s to 31mpg! Which i dont think is right, its a 1.9 m jet.

Any ideas?

Air con does kill MPG, when did you last get it serviced?
Take it to a aircon specialist, get the works done! Receiver Drier filters changed, new refrigerant, pollen filter, bacterial clean. if your refrigerant etc is in poor condition then the aircon will cycle something chronic and use way more fuel.
Also once its been serviced it'll be way cooler!

If your trip is 10-15 minutes in a city, then what you are getting is fine. Stop/start with a/c on dents consumption massively, my mother in Athens, Greece goes from 8ltrs/100km to 10.5ltr/100km when the a/c is on (Seat Toledo 1.6 16v petrol mk2 - from May until September). If your trip is on the motorway over a long distance, your consumption should not be that much affected.

why are you complaining if you get really low fuel consumption? surely that's a good thing ;)

You need a regass, when aircon is working well the compressor cycles on and off as the gas pressure rises and falls so it's only really running half the time when the gas gets low the system cannot reach a high enough pressure to kick out the high pressure switch so it will run constantly, and thus eat your fuel.
Another problem which can occur is if the system isn't used over the winter the components in the compressor can partially seize and make running the aircon much harder work for the engine.

So when you get it regassed make sure they put some oil in as well.

As a general rule anything below 30mph with the aircon off and windows open is more efficient, anything above this having the windows open creates too much drag and its more efficient to close the windows and run the aircon, but if you're like me then the aircon is on all the time as soon as the sun comes out because I hate being hot
