Once the plastic cover removed, changing the sensor is easy : two bolts.
Buying a sensor on ebay for less than 100$ is easy, too. You can make the exchange, if don't work better, back on ebay for selling.
This is the simplest/cost effective way I think.
You're right, a manual will be a good thing, and I'll be the second buyer after you.
But with electronic / electric on cars nowadays it's really difficult to repair/diagnose something without testing, software and good knowledge.
