2003 Duccatto with 2.8 jtd engine and transverse 5 speed box.
Away last weekend drove 120 kms, all good.
Started up next day and no gears select.
Clutch as normal and shift going into all the right places with no drive to wheels.

Stop engine and try again, all good.
No slipping no funny noises.
Drove 130 kms no problems.
Any ideas what happened ?

I cannot be certain of the following without checking on my own x244 2.8jtd (MLGU box), as the notes that I have relate to an earlier box.

The gear selection input to the box is a single round shaft, which is moved in or out as you move the lever across the gate (would need 4 discrete positions with MLGU box). Selecting a gear by moving the lever forwards (1st & 3rd), or backwards (2nd & 4th) rotated the selector shaft anticlockwise, or clockwise.

If the lever attching the cable to the box is slightly loose, the box could have been staying in neutral.

As suggested by @jackwhoo in post #2 above, careful observation of the mechanism while gears are selected, is perhaps the best way to diagnose. Not easy, but possible with vehicle on ramps. Alternatively remove air hoses and filter to see from above.

Drove it 130 kms last Sunday and shopping trip today and everything went good.
Will have a look at gearshift set up tomorrow.
