General Double Clutching and the cinq clutch cable

Dogs, almost without exception. I've heard of the same principle being applied to non dog boxes, in some early hypercars, but at the expense of (very) dramatically reduced gearbox life.

I've heard of it before - but I don't pretend to know what one is.... Dogbox?

I think you've got the better answer to what it actually is.

hehe thought you might like that :p

By the way - am I right in thinking that a dog box is something to do with clutchless gear changes?...... if so - pah! where's the fun in that! I love my clutch - especially since it now actually works :p

In a dog box, gears are forced into mesh by a selector fork and held there by "dogs" cast/forged or machined into the sides of the gears. It's arguably a more robust and faster mechanism than syncromesh (let alone crash gearboxes) but is cruder and noisier and is strictly sequential (you have to go 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc). Some racing gearboxes are dogboxes.

ah.... cool :)

If you think about the gearbox operation and realise that its not actually the gears that move when you change gears, it begins to make a bit of sense.

The gears are all in constant mesh, its the hub connecting it to the shaft that moves.

Dog boxes are as described and are used in motorsport. They are a pain for road use as you have to slam the gears in which can lead to jerky progress at low throttle openings.

Basically with a dog box if your revs are high enough you can slip the engine into the next gear very smoothly and of course, much more quickly

and since bike engines rev to almost 14.000 revs, its not difficult

but you can do the same thing with a ford escort van
