Technical Coolant pipe seal

Hi guys and gals. Will introduce myself properly later, got a bit of a question first. I had a coolant leak from the metal pipe that connects to the coolant hoses into the pump. Got hold of a new seal from fiat, have removed the pipe but it appears there was no seal fitted previously. Can anybody confirm exactly how the seal fits? Does it go over the pipe or does it sit between the end of the pipe inside the pump? I've got my haynes but there is no diagrams in there!

Sounds odd. My car has a groove outside the end of the pipe for the seal which in my case was an o-ring from the dealer although I'm told there are new designs that are ........ different

Yeah it's a rubber o-ring I got from fiat but there doesn't appear to be a groove for it to sit in!

The old one might be crushed flat, flush with the top of the groove.

Yes it was. I was being a right moron! It was that flat and discoloured it looked like part of the tube! Thanks for your help anyway. Doesn't seem to be leaking now though which is always a bonus.
