Technical Cinq Sporting, dead engine, what are my options?

Hi All,

The engine in my 1998 Cinquecento Sporting has developed a terminal rattle.
So, I need to replace the engine ASAP.

I've been told that there's a 1.4(?) engine that's a straight swap, is this right?

If so, what engine is it, and is it a straight swap?
I don't want to mess about doing a conversion, as I need the car back on the road as soon as possible.

If its not a straight swap, I'll just drop another Sporting engine in.

Any advice would be great.

Closest to straight swap is 1.2 8v. See here:

There is no such thing as a completely straight swap, even the 60 bhp 1.2 8v unit needs a small spacer to lengthen the downpipe.

In terms of easy to difficult, your options:
- 55 hp 1.1 sporting, straight replacement
- 60 hp 1.2 8v (punto 60), needs a downpipe extension
- 75 hp 1.2 8v (punto 75), needs a complete MPI conversion, ecu, fuel system etc..
- 80 hp 1.2 16v (bravo 80), MPI conversion, very little space for the head, so tight fit
- 95 hp 1.4 16v (stilo?), same as the 1.2 16v, just an even tighter fit.

That's stock engines, most of them have a slew of decent performance mods, up to turbo-ing.

So, the 1.2 punto 60 engine is a straight swap, except for an exhaust spacer.
That sounds do-able...

Thanks guys, now I just need to find a good engine.

If you're cheating on the 1.2 8v MPI and you have an SPI ECU it is possible to crosswire the injector driver to all four injectors so it is bank firing instead of sequential and retain the original ECU. There is no tangible loss of performance or economy. You do need the higher pressure fuel pump though but this is a straight swap! A lot of the earlier 1.2 conversions in the UK had this done, along with the 6 speed box.

For the 16v options you can't do the same.
