Technical Can't engage 1st gear after clutch change

Hi all I recently had my mate who is a machanic change the clutch on my Scudo van however we can't seem to get the thing in 1st gear it want's to set off in 3rd, if he goes under the bonnet and presses something 1st gear engages and off we go. Does anyone know what the problem could be and how to rectify this? Thanks x

he's a mechanic he should know what he is doing! Is he messing with the gear linkages? Never done a clutch on a scudo, done many others, normally just disconnect linkages and connect them up again, you should not have a problem with them. I presume your clutch is working, biting three quarters of the way up the travel.
