Technical Cam phase sensor

Can the cam phase sensor be replaced with out the engine having to come out? if so where is it situated. I can change the cam belt at the same time. but if the sensor cannot be replace with the engine in situ then it is the full engine out. Is there any major downfalls with takeing the engine out. anything hidden that I have to watch for please?

The RPM/TDC sensor can be in two places:

1. Bottom, left, front of engine on external rotor. This is not adjustable and gap should be 0.5 to 1.5mm.

2. Mounted on front of engine block just inboard of flywheel, internal rotor. You need to use a pencil or length of dowel to measure depth between the rotor and face of block. Compare this with length of sensor. Difference should be between 0.8 and 1.5mm.

You shouldn't need to drop the engine for either job.

Fiat say it needs 10 hours work to change it. that is why I was asking where it would be,the problem with the eCU is the cam phase sensor and I have bought that but not paying fiat £650 to fit it.

I'm a bit at a loss why that's necessary. What is the part number of the item you have bought and what does it look like?
The timing sensor is left front on the 20v and is a 5 minute job. I'm not aware of any sensor that requires an engine out job. Can you see the top of the sensor when you look down the front left side of the block? You only need to drop the engine if you have to replace the rotor itself.
The timing variator solenoid is just behind the oil filler cap. If the valve under that goes it is a big job, but I fixed mine by putting some tappet cleaner into the oil. I can't think of a sensor connected to this though.
I have some more info but it is in very large (over 100mb) .pdf files if you have a big connection.

All I am saying they guy want 10 hours to fit this sensor and I said no way If I had to take the engine out I would get the cam belt done as well. They cant find the part now that I have paid them upto know. so waiting for them to give me a ring when they find it. it is called a phase sensor. That is all the info I have. cost me 79 plus vat for the little sh*t plus £30 for half an hour diagnostic.

sorry to hear that im not alone.
The cam belt censor is (at least on my marea which is a 20v 2.0) placed behind the cambelt itself, so the engine has to get out. The trick is that it does not have to go all the way out. It can be tiltet thus skipping dismounting all tubes and wires.. but it takes roughly 6-8 hours to perform the stunt.. which in denmark equals 11000kr, (1 euro is 7,5kr do the math)

the rpm censor is placed on the engine front and is much cheaper..

when you change the phase censor also get the cambelt changed, and get the cooling pump checked it pays of nicely to change them at the same time.
