Ironically 2003 2.0 jtd timing belt broke on way to garage :( to get timing belt done. It is a low mileage 60k car in good condition so I think its worth repair.

Noted many bad experiences with forum users in same situation, with garage quoiting for new engine, unable to fix, etc. Doing a bit of research and it seems the major issue in repair is removing injectors. Fortunately there is a place in Malton North Yorkshire near me that specialise in this job.

My question is what is likely damage? Seems valve rocker arms are designed as weak point and pistons hit square on, some reports indicate just rockers and new belt kit? Presumably this could be done in situ (providing injectors come out ok) without the need to remove the head? If valves are damaged will the cylinder head / engine need to come out.

Want to have a good understanding of the job so I don't get shafted. Thinking of getting injectors removed then taking to local garage and getting them to replace rocker arms, fit new belt/tensioner kit and compression test with engine in situ. If compression test fails then cylinder head off to replace valves? Is this a realistic approach??

Before you do anything I suggest you Google "C8 Centre Edinburgh".

Mine broke a couple of years ago and my understanding now is that what you have said is correct, if the injectors come out, just replace ALL 16 rockers even if some may look ok.
There is of course no guarantee that the valves are not damaged but if mine was to go again that is what I would do.
Good Luck

If it was mine, that would be my 1st call - in situ repair for just over a grand. They truck the car away, fix it, you pick it up and drive home from Edinburgh.

You can't replace the rockers with the injectors in situ and most garages won't be able to get the injectors out. The C8 centre guys use serious hydraulics. As others have said, the rockers are sacrificial and will need to be replaced - all of 'em. The valves will be ok. The centre price includes all parts. (Usual disclaimer!)

Yes good point !
Injectors are highly unlikely to pull out easily, so if a local garage says they can do it be very cautious as you may well end up with an escalating bill.
Let us know how it goes.
