Styling Black headlights legal?

Hi everyone! I need some advice

I was thinking of cutting my mk2b headlights open and painting the surround black like a lot of people on here have done.

But a few days ago I asked my mechanic if these would be legal and he said no... Although it doesn't sound like anyone else has had this problem.

He said that painting the surrounding area or tinting the outside of the headlights would fail the MOT. Is this true? U.K laws btw

Erm... as long as your not affecting the light pattern or light output itll be okay

So if you sprayed the chrome reflector dishes its mess it up
But not everything else

Im not 100%
Also didnt somebody do that on here?

I think if its only the small round surround and as ziggy said doesnt affect the pattern it should be ok. Saw it on many cars and a mate just done it on his focus rs.
Light beam must be white or yellow light.

How does the mot man know it doesn't affect the pattern? He doesn't have a "before" and "after"

Thanks. I will buy another pair of headlights and do it on them. When MOT times comes around i may put the standard ones back in, just to be safe and keep him happy
