Hi
My clutch pedal "clunked" and went floppy. The garage are telling me that the 2 "stud bolts" holding the clutch cylinder have snapped.
The garage say that to access the studs, drill them out and replace them is likely to be 6 hours or so and that they don't want to undertake it.
Any advice on whether this sounds plausible, whether this is a known fault and most importantly what I should do/go. I'm in Croydon.
Any suggestions appreciated:bang:

welcome to the forum.
never heard of that happening before, can you post o photo of it? they must mean the slave as master is also the brake cylinder, it shouldn't take 6 hours to re thread them holes

Hi Dave
Many thanks for your welcome and comments.
They say it is very difficult to access and that they need to drill out the remains of the studs prior to fitting new ones.
By the sounds of it they think they need to undo quite a lot and possible lift the engine to get access.
I'm guessing a "clutch" specialist is not going to be interested.
I doubt I can get a photo.
If it is not a known issue, I'm guessing a FIAT garage are going to be horrifically expensive, so maybe I just need to "trawl" garages, but I'm frightened that leaves me pretty vunerable.

Without knowing what has broken its hard to say but if the studs are part of the bulk head then I can understand how it could potentially take 6 hours in removing parts inside the cabin and in the engine bay, drill/grind out what's left of the studs, refit reweld and repaint to stop the repair rusting followed by putting it all back together it could be quite a big job for what is seemingly such a petty thing.

1. If you can Post a photo so we can advise accordingly
2. Tell us what part of the country are you in there may be members near by who could help you out

Hi

It is the master cylinder studs that have snapped, since access is so difficult I think a photo is not possible.

I live in Shirley, Croydon and so I'm looking for someone nearby to collect the car and carry out the replacement.
Any suggestions welcomed.

my bad, its only the reservoir that is shared

i'll try and remember to look at our idea tomorrow to see what the job involves

Problem solved!
A friend suggested "GCSE" (Horn Autos) in Purley. George is a "real" mechanic and sorted me out.
It seems 1 nut had slackened, the bolt had snapped and then the increased load on the remaining bolt had snaped that one too.
Excellent piece of work and reasonablely priced too. I know where I'll go in future!

Many thanks for suggestions & support

..so if you're prone to slack nuts you're better off with an auto.

Good to hear there are still some real mechanics around. (y)
