Saying that I knew a lad with a massive old 3.5 tonne Iveco Daily car transporter that had been professionally extended, I couldn't understand how it was registered in the log book as 3.5 tonne. I looked in the cab and there was a plate from the specialist who converted it stating the weight was somewhere around 5 tonne, the lad hadn't even seen that, so some one made a mistake!!!
Aha…we have neighbours that confused this on their trailer, they run a ‘posh’ butty van. They asked my advice on two very nice trailers but I told them that their motor couldn’t tow it as, although the trailer was braked and just under their tow weight, as soon as they outfitted it it would be well over (and North Yorkshire police aren’t exactly forgiving). The trailer was rated at 1.5t so it was safely under weight, but that’s what it can carry, not what the total weight would be

ommercial vehicles it's the gvw on the v5c that sets the mot class.

For instance some military land rover 110s gvw 3050kg = class 7 mot

Frankly I see far more crappy class 7 mot that pass than class 4
Many massive campers park on the road.
Mind you the way cars are getting bigger, the drivers of some new EVs will have to get them plated;););).

Is that because they are campers so not classed as commercial vehicles?
I do know campers can have different speed limits to commercials.

Probably because even less chance of getting to a charging point;)
Yup, we replaced our Polaris Ranger with an EV UTV, half the weight and towing capacity BUT also a lot less to go wrong and it does exactly the same job as you can’t really get more than a couple of bales in anyway

I think it’s arbitrary now as, even though not classed as commercial, they are such a size and weight that you have to get it tested at class7 places
One of my customers had a Cherokee Sun Voyager ? which was based on a small American lorry I think and he always took it to the council depot for Mot.
Many years ago a Circus used to bring it's Mercedes 608 van to us for Mot, as it had living accommodation in England we could Mot it, but once it traveled back to Germany it had to have a full test. After I left that garage to go self employed one of the testers made the mistake of driving it on to the brake rollers and knackered them, I always took it up the road and used the Churchill Brake meter, you can't help some people :(.
