Technical 1.3 MJET turbo not kicking in

What would cause a well looked after Panda 1.3 75bhp to start going only at 2600-3000rpm? I was under the impression that this engine gets the turbo going at a maximum of 2000rpm?

I have a full version of FiatECUscan and an ELM interface, maybe I can look at some figures there..?

But wouldn't a faulty MAF throw an engine warning light? I know when I disconnect it on my Punto it's there.

In case of DIYing it, where is it located?

Front of engine immediately after the air box. Totally dead ones throw up a light but wonky ones don't.

Would a dirty, unloved EGR cause a significant increas in turbo lag? It is atrocious, you floor it in first all the way to 4000rpm, shift to second and it still isn't enough to keep it in the turbos range.

If one of the air intake hoses after the turbo is split it'll leak off boosted air.

Can it be checked with FES somehow? Where is it located, are we talking about cleaning it or just replacing?

Well, having the limited driving time I only noticed fairly normal turbodiesel sounds. A squeak did get my attention a couple of times, but I always just attributed that to being normal. Will look into that.

To me, it sounds like its got the same symptoms our Multipla had, when it has a blocked EGR - does it crap out a load of black smoke when it gets going?

Pretty sure boost pressure can be checked in FES, no idea where though - and you'd replace the sensor, no idea where it is though - I'd guess that a screwed boost sensor would through an error code though.

Any answer is a good answer. Sadly no, I ruled out the EGR almost entirely due to the complete lack of black smoke.

The boost sensor and the MAF are very good propositions to me. I guess I'll dive deeper into diagnosing them. Does anyone know how much pressure is the turbo giving to the engine? I'm really not up to date on JTD tech details.

I monitor the signal wire on the boost pressure sensor.

Wastegate jammed open, it's vacuum actuator is broken or some vacuum issue with the vacuum supply. (like a split vacuum pipe)

I believe the actuator defaults the wastegate to open if it's knackered, so no vacuum with leave the wastegate open to bypass the gases.

The faster the engine revs, the more boost the turbo should produce (this needs controlling), this then produces more vacuum to the actuator, this then operates the arm that opens the wastegate. (makes sense?)

Pull the pipe off and check there's vacuum being produced.
After that it's checking if the diaphragm in the actuator is ok (usually done with a vacuum gauge and pump)
After that, check the arm is free to move the wastegate, they can soot up and jam.

Been a long time, but a replacement MAF/LMM sorted it. Now it pulls like a train. Not kidding, it's unbelieveable how much it affected the power. All is well now.
