YES - it's the fluid that powers the gearchanges, via actuators
topping up is awkward..and the fluid is @£10,

once refilled it may be worth bleeding via the ECU - using a specialist program

Thanks for the replies. I took the car to the Glyn Hopkin fiat dealership in cambridge and the car has now had its gear selector fluid topped and is now working fine.
