Hi everyone,

I've been having some issues with the stilo, jtd 8v engine 2004.

It was running cold, then suddenly started overheating on anything above tickover revs.

I changed the thermostat last week with help from Davren, but the issue remained. So having read posts, decided it was the water pump.

I got the timing belt off and the water pump out, and yes it was the water pump, the impellor was just spinning on the shaft and not providing any water circulation.

It was all going well, got the new pump in, new belt on, timing marks lined up. Tensioned up the belt by pushing it across, then tried to rotate the belt using a socket on the pulley.

My issue is that there wasn't enough tension in the belt, the top two pulleys moved in synch, but on the bottom pulley the belt slipped over the teeth, I did this at least 2 or 3 times before I noticed!

The timing must now be WAYYY out. Any ideas what I do to sort this please??? How do I get the timing back in synch? I'm guessing this is not good.

cheers nod

Can you not just redo it, if timing not too far out that the valves stop rotating crank, if you can line up the cam pully with the markers on pully and engine casing, remove belt and refit correctly with the belt mark to the crank pully, with belt then removed would have to turn the crank pully back in anti clockwise direction the amount of teeth jumped for belt marks to line up, then check marks on belt match crank and cam pully markers, be worth checking belt for any signs of damage to teeth of the belt, guess depends how many teeth jumped over pully, though jtd is a case of just lining up all the markers on belt and pully,..Alfa workshop has a short info guide on it's 8v cambelt link below and perhaps possible with belt off and lining up cam pulley then fit belt marks to cam and crank markers

Thanks for your advice mhowse. i took the belt off, realigned it with the timing marks and strangely it was spot on. so i put everything back together, having done battle with the tensioner for a while.

I'm pleased to say my overheating is sorted and the engine runs fine. Could not have done my first timing belt and water pump without the forum. Thanks to all the contributors.

cheers nod.

Good is all getting sorted , least you would of double checked the belt and pully line up, just a thought that when you have it all back together remember once coolant is filled to bleed the system by 3 bleed points one plastic finger/thumb type on top radiator on right side when stood at front of car, one small bolt on pipe that runs across front of engine and one other is black plastic screw driver type on right side towards back of engine in the pipe work carefully not to over tighten when air is bled out of system as they are small and 2 made of plastic so can break if tighten too much. Doing them in lowest point first, which irc is order of the list above so you have the air out of the system, top up coolant when done..
