Hi all

My gear stick no longer self centres and sometimes feel a bit stiff but I'm not sure why I've had a look at the ball joint under the gear cover and lubricated it up no difference

I've looked at gear linkage and noticed a rubber boot/cover that's pretty much ripped off just hanging on by its teeth , would this be my problem, what's under the rubber cover on gear linkage it's right next to the pivot

I'm thinking maybe it's dried out or something

Cheers

I think this was covered in one of your other threads on the same issue
https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo/264546-stilo-gearbox-stiff-neutral.html
mine did the same thing when I hurt my back and wasn't driving for 6 mnths
it stiffened right up and wouldn't self center(when started driving again).
I tried all the lubing stuff around the gear lever but made no difference.
then went to the gearbox end and used a thin spray lube to soak the shaft and bushes shown in the thread above and also the open ends of the cables.
did this for a few days I think when back in use and then it freed up a bit and then switched to a thicker lube to coat it all.
if someone can work the gear lever as you spray the linkage it will help it get in there better.
I bought new plastic bushes incase(to do proper job and remove linkage polish shaft and ally hole and replace top hat bushes) it came back but hasn't yet probably 18mnths on

Ah I knew I posted on it before couldn't find it cheers

Really strange I'm hoping it's not an internal gearbox issue

How do you get into the linkage it's so hard to get into I'm thinking removing fuse box and battery tray

yea mines been ok since
I had a long maybe 18" spray nozzle and tube off another spray can that made it easier to get on the linkage.
I think it was easier to put my left arm and can over the inlet manifold and spray from there, as you say from the right theres lots of stuff in the way, I have egr gone so might have been a little easier for me.
if you have a bit of spare tube you could dribble some lube down the tube and drip it direct where you want it.

Which bit is the eve is that the solid black hose bolted into engine at top?

theres a guide on alfa forum with plenty pics of the linkage to lube,

or how to take apart and do full job.
wont look identicle but the linkage on the gearbox is the same , I just soaked it externally hoping it would soak into the shaft and it did, thin penetrating type oil first to seep in then I used a thicker oil to hopefully keep rust away again.
