But it has a problem, the seller says it loses power and stalls when driving, sometimes it will start again straight away and sometimes you will have to wait 5 mins before it will start. He also says disconnecting the battery for 10 secs sometimes sorts it.

What do you all think the problem is? Inlet control valve? I have cleaned this before on my VW Polo so I know what to do. It is being sold incredibly cheap and if the problem is just the inlet control valve then I would be getting a great deal. He did say he had taken it to garage to get the codes read but there were no codes stored.

Were the 1.6's not re called with ecu problems? Not 100% sure but I think a read somewhere cutting out was a common problem with them.

nope never recalled, but are prone to failure as they are mounted on the engine.
There are some fixes which requires you to take the ecu apart and push then solder the pins back in place, ive done this job twice and it fixed it.
other things to check are the throttle body likes to clog up and cause hunting / stalling or a coil pack.

many years back there was a software update, i think this was to solve low oil pressure and a throttle body update which solved hunting, but this must have been around 2004-5 when i had mine done. I also had a part of the wiring loom replaced as it was constantly blowing headlight bulbs.
i think there may have two other recalls on the spring catchers and fan switch.
