Hi guys
just a quick word of warning, my brake pads just started to grind tonight on the way to work, i was a bit surprised as the warning light hadn't came on and the brakes looked ok when i looked over the car yesterday.
The n/s had worn right down and broken up, the warning cable had popped out and was hanging down!!!
drivers side was also heavy worn but both pads on the outside had loads of wear left (thus leaving me with a false sense of confidence in their stopping ability).
I had the drive from hell home, 25miles and i didn't touch the brakes once other than when stopped - using the gears and handbrake was very effective lol.
Luckily i keep a stock of brakes, disks, bulbs, oils, and filters, and changed the brakes in under 20mins both sides!!! AN NEW RECORD FOR ME lol.

They were cheap pads (pagid), ive now got a descent set on once again (bosch), and luckily the disks were still serviceable - with my careful drive the disks are still un scored.

Ive never been so thankful to my draper brake compressor set, it made mincemeat of the cylinders, usually im swearing into it after 30 mins trying to return the cylinders with the handle of a hammer.

So guys check the inner pads and makes sure the wire is intact on the nearside.

Using a big 'G' clamp is just as good Paul if you looking for a budget item does fine on the front as none of that twisting of the piston needed, just place a small something across the piston walls then pushes piston in with a breeze, piece of wood will do..
Have mintex pads in mine at mo and gave them a clean up a few months back to find the cable had come free from the pad, needless to say it not be mintex going in next time, just have a quick check every few months, even with drilled discs they lasting ok though but up here it is not so much stop and go traffic.

i used a g clamp too.... i changed mine recently after a mettallic scraping noise was heard on turning left... turns out my pads had gone hard, so i replaced the discs (in the pipeline to do anyway) and fitted mintex pads on the front, no more scraping noise and brakes are back to there best again

You don't need a rewind tool for the front pistons. Just place an old pad across the hollow end and fit a G clamp then start compressing. The sensor wire to the inside NS pad is very fragile. It can come out of its socket or the wire can break. Don't rely on it to tell you when the pads are worn.

I'm a cheapskate. I do the rears with one of these, pressing down on a cheap 6-sided cube tool. Every time I mutter about buying the proper tool, but I never get round to it.
