Hello

When i'm coming to a stop at a junction or pulling up theres a clonk that sounds like its coming from the front. It doesn't do it every time and happens when pulling up in gear and knocking it out of gear. It sounds like its from the engine, maybe at the front or middle i'm not sure. The car is a JTD.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks

Phil

could be a broken gearbox mount or engine mount. Could even be drop links I suppose but that's easy to see.

Check the gearbox mounts and engine mounts first job...(y)

now I think about it, check the front engine mount - you can see it from the front I think between the rad and engine...

I had this on mine, felt like the whole engine was moving!! It was actually the bottom wishbones! Because the rubber was so far gone on the bushes the arms were moving forward under heavy breaking!! Get your car up on a ramp or hydraulic jack and check the mounting points out with a bar, chances are this is what it is!!

This is still happening, today was in York driving with the windows down and heard it quite a lot.

Clivvy - the gearbox mount and drop links are new so I doubt it's not them. The gearbox mount fixed the dreaded passenger side dash rattle

Vezrob - The wishbones on the driver side are new but not sure the state of the passenger side.

However I think it's to do with the brakes. I google'd it and looked at other forums with similar issues and it sounds like something in the braking system could be moving or shifting when coming to a stop. The brake discs are new on both sides but I'm wondering whether the pads are shifting/moving when slowing down. Like I said it doesn't happen every time but most times, also does it when slowing down when reversing.

My car passed it's MOT but got an advisory for the steering rack inner joints so I wonder if it's anything to do with that....?

I'd better get it checked out

Hi Phil sorry to diversifi from your post but you said changed gearbox mount to cure dash rattle, I got a squeak on my passenger's side but sounds more like a pully/ fan type of noise but nothing like that in vicinity, could it be the same?

Hello uktrucker

Does the squeak go or quieten down when the engine is warm and is worse when cold and at idle? I had the symptoms of a worn gearbox mount, rattle present on idle and cold but quietened down/disappeared when warm. However in my case the rattle wasn't metallic it was more plasticy! Being a plastic like rattle confused me a little as it's usually a metallic rattle so a squeak could be present I suppose if it is the gearbox mount. Usually the rubber at the top of the mount hardens with age causing it to rattle against the metal of the mount hence causing the annoying noise. However in my case it was the bush under the gearbox mount (what Fiat told me), hence a different type of rattle. Any rattles or noise in the passenger side area could be because of the gearbox mount as the it is situated near the inner wing on the passenger side. You could inspect the mount but I had mine diagnosed and fixed by my local Fiat dealer. Just to add, it's definitely not the crank pulley or any belts and it's transmitting the noise to the other side.....? Oh and also when the squeak is present put your head right into the passenger side foot well and see if it's louder and/or clearer.

Thanks Phil, Mines more of constant squeak, more so on acceleration rather than braking, but will try and look at both gear& engine mounts when I get chance.

Ah right, do you know whereabouts these mounts are underneath Clive?

Phil

On the JTD there's one on the engine and one on the gearbox. They attach to the suspension cross beam. The design is slightly different for 80bhp and 115bhp engines.
