hey chaps! I have read though a lot of posts about oil, but i have my own questions!

My Stilo 1.9 JTD (115) is coming up to 100k miles. To celebrate, I want to do a good oil change. So, with this in mind, what would be the BEST oil filter, and BEST oil be for this sort of mileage?

Hello

Not sure about the best oil but with regards to the filter i'd say Bosch. I use them on every service along with their air and fuel filters. I used them on the old engine and now this engine, had no probs.

Just to add: i've used Mobil 1 0-40 FS and Halfords 10-40 SS oils, no problems with either. However i think engine sounds less clattery when cold with Mobil 1.

If it was me and I was changing the oil on 100k and wanted to treat the engine I would do :

  • Warm engine up then drain oil and remove filter.
  • Refit sump plug
  • Fit new filter
  • Pour in good qaulity flushing oil.
  • Run engine in idle for 20 mins.
  • Drain flushing oil, if changed colour then that tells you how dirty your engine really is. If colour changed, keep the same filter and repeat the process till flushing oil clear.
  • Refit sump plug
  • Refill with Mobil, Motul, Selenia oil
  • Fit new Bosch filter
Away you go, but while your at it, why not change the gearbox oil??

good thinking, ill do the engine flush, may as well.

As for the gear box oil, yeah I suppose I should really while I am under there, no idea when it was done last so ill have a look (y)

Hi guys,

Didn't really think a new thread was needed as this answers nearly all my questions.

Just a few more -
What flushing oil have people successfully used in their JTD's? How much do you use at a time?
Does the sump plug need replacing when changing the oil?
Do I need an oil filter wrench to remove the filter?

Thanks guys!
PS. Tempted to do the gearbox oil now... just turned 99,000 miles today!

hi,

I use Wynns Oil Flush - come sin a can you use the whole can:

always replace the sump plug and washer - always ensure you can loosen the sump filler plug before loosening the sump plug and draining the oil.

Filter Wrench will certainly come in handy yes - I used a simple one like this:

definitely do the gear box oil if it hasn't been done - its part of the major service but like in most cars, missed!!

good luck mate!

sometimes its not recommended using something like that engine flush on an older high milage engine especially if its not been done before or regularly.
the worry being that if lots of crud has built up on engine internals a flush like that breaks it down and lets it go through engine(worry being blocking oil galleries).
maybe the process of using the cheaper flushing oil as listed above is the safer option, unless your happy to use oil flush.
don't get me wrong I use oil flush on mine but have always used fully synthetic and flushed every couple of changes so I know theres no crud in there.

only a real danger on REALLY OLD engines... like pre electronically controlled... the best way to flush is run a cheaper diesel engine oil through it 2 or 3 times allowing 500 or so miles between drops. diesel engine oil have higher levels of detergents in them and aid with crud clearance. for petrol engines you can flush with diesel (straight from the pumps) but you run the engine for an hour or so on tick over with no loads.

i wouldnt advise flushing with diesel on diesel engines though due to the higher heats involved and ive *heard* you can run the risk of washing bores. but ive only ever found washed bores on engines that have been driven with excessive amounts of diesel in the oil.

I've heard about the danger of flushing on engines that are high mileage that don't get done often. In the 4 years i've had it i haven't flushed it, but can't comment on the previous owners.

If i'm intending to fill it with some nice Mobil1, should I flush it through first with some cheap ASDA diesel oil?

Is 500 miles right, or could I get away with two changes at 250 each?
Once i've done that, and it's time to change the oil again in 6 months time, could I get away with an oil flush then, or safer to stick with a cheap oil to flush it?

yeah if you're in a hurry to get it done a 250 drop would be ok youll probably find a lot of crud will come out of the 1st drop if its gummed up at all and the second drop relatively clean!

kinda what you want though... dont forget to renew filter with each drop!
