Technical Vibration Under Acceleration

May be a stab in the dark, but when I bought my stilo last year I noticed the same thing. Lat month, after driving from Newcastle to London I set back off again to find all of a sudden it got 100x worse. It was shaking violently every time I accelerated. The RAC guy said the coils burn out and the car misfires. He also said you may not notice the first one going, but when two or more go you do really notice. I replaced number 3 and 4 and the car was back to its usual self straight away.

Mines diesel so no coils ..

I think i have this problem now!!

went to Angelsey yestaday set the cruise control at 75mph, when the car needed to accelerate putting the drive shaft under abit of load i would get a vibration on the passenger side.

i couldnt feel it through the steering wheel it was just the n/s front, its not as bad at 70mph!.

i thought track rods but theres no play in the rack so they reckon its a drivehshaft. all tyres are 3 months old, Balanced etc. im getting the bushes finally done because the car drifts from side to side, got told by the mechanic the ar*e end of the cars all over the place!

cheers

Paul

similar issue here with vibration under load had all tyres checked for balance and just passed mot with no advisories ...been at it checking driveshafts for play and on my jtd multiwagon I have way too much play in the o/s driver side driveshaft not at the cv on the wheel but the tripod joint where the smaller shaft connects to longer, also cbit of knock when putting into gear as the tripod joint takes up any play at the joint...have just found second hand part which waiting to arrive and see if this helps cure the vibration issue and like others it does give more vibration on n/s passenger side although that side driveshaft is fine guess is just how vibration travels through chassis of car as for mine is def the driver side shaft that is worn

So this morning I replaced the drives side O/side inner driveshaft tripod only held on with circlip came off easy due to wear ,,new one was much tighter fit find a good size socket and tap new one on and slip circlip back on grease up housing and new tripod bearings,, put back together and all vibration had has gone,,.although the vibration was more on passenger side it was the drivers side inner driveshaft joint that had worn one of the tripod bearings was cracked and other two was well worn..as there are different size driveshafts just replacing the inner tripod bearing was easiest option for myself for my jtd 115 multiwagon the tripod is a 26 tooth spline and outer bearing diameter is 42mm, but check as there are different sizes on the stilo, did check the housing for wear and nothing wrong there also it is not cv grease for the inner but a high temp thicker grease..and when all back together have no vibration when accelerating or under load up hil,,l nice smooth drive now..it started as vibration starting at about 55mph and gradually got worse so any load applied from throttle would have car shake was thinking of looking at passenger side top engine mount but no need now as very pleased with a more pleasant drive compared to when the worn inner driveshaft tripod was at end of its day and an easy enough fix just cleaning up the grease and little drive but sure better to be able to do 60mph with out the wipers shaking themselves off.

Hi ..I got my inner tripod joint from Driveshafts uk

Yes my vibration initially was about 50 to 60 mph and slowely got worse to point of even 40mph had car shaking about but more on passenger side even though was drivers side inner joint that had gone..
You would be best checking your driveshaft by jacking it up and seeing how much play you have at the drivers side inner joint I did this first and though passenger side was fine the drivers inner joint was terrible could rattle it about good and proper while all other suspension and drive parts were fine.
Also if your inner drivers side tripod is gone you will need to get it off first so you know the correct size unless you know for sure what size tripod is on yours, and def the inner joint that is worn..once you have driveshaft out of inner housing it is only held with circlip and if worn knocks off shaft real easy, and just take care when tapping new tripod on not to damage the bearings is why I used right sized socket as a drift to tap it on but has certainly cured all vibration I had.
The chap at driveshaft uk was very helping and once given the size of tripod I needed was deliverd in few days and all back together in 2 hours

info like that is always handy to know I googled away and could only come up with driveshafts uk, it got me sorted but if can save a penny or pound or two is much better when paying for the same part mine came to £70 with vat and postage to scotland, although the chap was fair when I orderd the tripod and said he would get his supplier to send the tripod bearing from whoever his supplier was.but in future well hope for many miles yet will go to the link you posted shadyman.thanks
mileage on mine is 109000miles now so not a worry in replacing an item that is going to wear at some point..although when I replaced mine I did notice the inner boot was held with cable tie so at some point before I owned it someone had done some work in that area but no idea what,,, the boot still looked origenal unless it had got pulled off when doing wishbone or something at some point before I owned it, could account for it wearing if water had got in, I used a jubilee clip undone inner arch by pulley and just pull the inner cover plastic down a bit gave enough access to do up the clip as limited space to work.did not have to touch the smaller boot clip and looked like an origenal item
