Hi,

I have the same problem, that I saw in another topic:
..when idle the car is on 800rmp feels like it will cut off any minute and its very noisy and vibrates when idle...

It seems to be a timing issue.
So I decided to buy the needed locking tools, as suggested in the Timing belt change guide.

I have found the cam locking kit (Sealey) :

http://www.justoffbase.co.uk/Petrol-Twin-Cam-Locking-Setting-Kit-Fiat-1-6-16v-Sealey-VS1402

But I cannot find the mentioned Crank Locking tool
Can anybody tell me, what is it, and where to get it?
Is the cam locking kit not enough?

Thanks!

Are you sure your not over thinking the problem?

Check this out....

I have cleaned it already. It didnt solved the problem...

You do also understand that your car has a ‘soft idle’ which keeps the revs low but will often kick up a bit too stop it stalling.

My idle is above 800rpm, changing between 800 and 825-830.
When i sit in the car at idle, i can feel the vibrations, this is very irritating.
This cannot be the normal behaviour.

When was it last serviced? Old spark plugs, dodgy coil-pack, clogged air filter...

Start by eliminating these before you choose to do major surgery (y)

Spark plugs, air filter were changed this weekend.
I also cleaned the inlet control valve 2-3 weeks ago.

Nothing seem to have effect on the fluctuating idle.
I also checked the Lambda sensor values with FiatEcuScan, they seem to work correctly.

What do you mean by dodgy coil-pack? Can the coils be tested with a diagnostic software? I tought, that they are working correctly, or not at all.

But the original question stays: what is a crank locking tool?

A flyhweel locking tool (shown 2a) simply stops the engine rotating.

The Sealey kit has a flywheel locking tool in it. Some people simply wedge the starter ring gear with something so you can release the crank pulley centre bolt but the bolt can be extremely tight

If you check the timing against the piston position and it is correct then you won't need to lock the crankshaft

Why do you suspect crankshaft to camshaft timing is incorrect? Has the car had any work done on the cambelt area?

Hope the Link works.

Thanks for the reply!

I have no other idea more.
What should I check?

I bought the car 7 months ago, I have this problem since then.
The cambelt was changed, but without locking tool.

The garage, where I taked the car, hadnt found the problem, so I tried to ignore it.. but the vibrations are very disturbing

Verifieing and fixing the timing in the local Fiat-Service costs more, than buying a locking tool and take it to the garage.

It's extremely likely then to be a cambelt timing problem. Heavy vibrations and a poor idle rpm are symptoms of a valve timing error

With air con off then your 1.6 should idle steadily at around 730-750rpm like this

I have never owned a car with soft idle that is that smooth and low. It would be good if i could achieve something like what the OP has lol.
I certainly wouldnt be pulling my car apart to rectify it, especially manual timing.
Surely the timing is done on the ECU. There would have to be a massive problem to justify Mechanical adjustment, unless im mistaken.

Ha! You wish!:)

Ignition and fuel timing is done by the ECU, that's a different ballgame, valve timing is permanently set on 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 engines right the way through the rpm range. The crank to valve timing is critical, just a few degrees either way and it's a bag of bones

You just need to find the No.1 piston TDC with a depth gauge and check camshafts positions are correct there with the cam alignment tools. It's a very quick check

Heavy regular vibration at idle is pretty awful on the senses
