hi
iv been offered what i thought was a bargain of a 2002 1.6 16v stilo for under £700 taxed an tested but ha ha heres the thing

1st i went to look an drives ok but kept saying stop engine fault so got worried took it back an asked if he minded if i took a mate who has some testing gear to plug it in an the chap said no problem, i took my freind who pluged it all in fine an it says tps fault am i right in thinking this is the valve that you can clean ok at the end of the air inlet pipe?

also it said passenger side weight sensor fault, passenger side squib fault an drivers side squib fault which my mate said are the airbag deploy things, is there any software for this or do they need renewing?and would the weight thing be a case of hopefully taking the connecter apart an cleaning the contacts as mentioned in the guides at the top of the page?

sorry to be a pain but i really liek the look of this car an its a nice size family car for me the mrs an the 3 kids an for the price he has offered it me i think its a gem but not if i have to spend a grand getting it working ok lol
i would be very gratefull of any advice so i can go an have a try at a few things tomoro i mean the guy is nice enough to even let me try some things an still have it at the same price if i fixit or not have it if i cant i cant see anyone being any nicer than that

cheers anyway
andy

i never thought to right the code down an its the only 1 that really bothers me as it was the only 1 that came up to do withthe engine the others where just airbag 1s

is the part that is at the end of the air pipe not the tps then an if not where abouts is that part?

cheers
an sorry to be a pain

thanks for your help i went up today gave it a little clean wasnt as dirty as i thought it might of been but it did have a build up of what looked like varnish

put it all back together an fired it up worked a treat, then i did the learn throttle procedure an it is now a great little sounding car all i have to do is sort the airbag problems out

if anyone has any ideas on this then i would be very gratefull
cheers

Depends on how many airbags there are. I've got 8, and times (propably) 4 connectors each it's simple math. It is usually down to dodgy contacts, and solution is to disconnect, clean and reconnect. But - to do it properly you have to solder, but that's not something you want to do unless you take precautions.

Does the passenger seat (cushion) have a small cloth tag saying OCS? Check this first, and I'll explain some tests afterwards.

I just fixed a side impact sensor, you'll find the thread - just a couple of days ago.

What is the simplest way is to go to a garage having either the Examiner or the green BOSCH computer with Windows Embedded. These pin out exactly which sensor or airbag is faulty. Then you can work your way through the connectors up to the item itself. Most errors clear themselves after 3 clean starts. Not the side impact sensor fault though - that one has to be erased manually.

cheers morty i will have a good look at your thread
my freinds tester is a snap-on thing i have no idea of the model numbers of it but it said

passenger side weight sensor (im guessing this is the ocs)
passenger side squib
drivers side squib

The OCS is a wheight sensor - a fibreoptics mat causing problems. You'll find the grey connector under the passenger's seat. But it usually is a defective sensor, and has to be changed. To make it extra funny, it is glued to the cushion itself, so the replacement item is pretty large.

Then you don't have it. Your passenger airbag will deploy automatically in an accident, and not be saved or "multistaged" by the sensor chip.

I think they were removed sometime during production line. 2005 (or sometimes around) showed a low-spec Stilo, with missing rear fog lights besides the number plate.

I read a description of the airbag system in eLEARN a while ago. It was a poor transtation from Italian, but I understood it as only Stilos with the full complement of 8 airbags have the OCS fitted.

Perhaps someone with less than 8 airbags can confirm or deny this?

been told i've 6 airbags but def have an OCS (counting the airbags manually I get: 2 front curtain, 2 front seats, front pas and driver = 6.. unless the once on mid pillar are not front curtain but are rear curtain? HMMM eitherway.. = 6)

Well mines a 2004 face lift (none rear fogs in boot lid, and rear rear lenses).

Multi stage is still there though. Thats based on impact severity, not if someone is sitting there isn't it?

I've 6 and appear not to have it.
