I've been having intermittent problems with the gearbox. Sometimes it refuses to change from 2nd to 3rd without me doing it with stick. Then it will be fine for days or I'd get a couple of snatchy changes or the odd refusal and then it would be fine.

Occasionally it holds gears too long then changes and the gear change can be jerky, disengaging the clutch then what seems like an age to select the next gear and re-engage the clutch.

It was so intermittent that the chances of it happening when a garage looked at it were slim to none!:(

Eventually it got to be more regular so I took it to my local indie Fiat specialist who diagnosed a brake light switch problem which he adjusted and all was fine for a while then it started to play up culminating with a long journey where it performed faultlessly. However, the next morning it refused to start as it was stuck in 1st gear and the check transmission warning was showing.

I downloaded multiecuscan and ordered a cable from fleabay and, lo and behold it shows in both the engine ECU and the gearbox ECU that I have a brake pedal switch problem.

I tried to clear the errors but they won't clear as it says the fault is present rather than intermittent. I then try, and fail to remove the switch, poor access and unable to get sufficient grip on it. :(

That's the bad news, the good news is that all my twisting, pulling and general messing with it has cleared the fault. I've given it a blast of contact cleaner and WD40 and was able to clear the ECU fault codes.

It drives perfectly again but it would be foolish not to replace the switch for what they cost.

Does anyone know what the correct part number is and is there an idiots guide to getting it out? I understand it's a bayonet fitting, a quarter turn and pull but I couldn't shift it!

Any help appreciated.

brake light switch.. use ePER to find the part number(y)

then Ebay for a good price..;)

Picked up a switch this morning from my local auto factors for £14 and have fitted it.

I reset the engine and gearbox ECU fault codes and have just been out for an hours test drive. Everything is working as it should.
