head gasket isn't that bad to do on these - it is recommended you get the head skimmed, and while thats being done you may as well get the valve stem seals changed and lap the valves. The rest you can do at home, if you not done one before i suggest you just get a haynes (99% sure it covers the 16v) and follow the steps. I would buy a set of timing tools as well, it can be done without but having done it both ways its so much easier and less scary with them, the cheapy £25 ones on ebay are just fine.
