I had no idea where to put this, as it asks about insurance, general modding of the car, etc.

The Punto is soon to go into audioconcepts to have fitted:

-Amplifier + sub
-New front speakers
-Ipod-able CD head unit
-Remote central locking
-New alarm + immobiliser

As for insurance, the new alarm and immobiliser will apparently decrease the insurance by 2 or 3%, but with the sub, and amp classify as a mod? Will any of these changes bump up the insurance?

Im a bit curious with the alarm and immobiliser - are the changes essentially and extension of the current immobiliser, or will it be changed? What will happen to the current Fiat keys with regards to the immobiliser?

From the sounds of it, the current keys will be used - at least, he said "no problem" when asking what car it was. He also was aware of the way the Fiat keys work.

I did try asking him these questions, but he answered very brief before showing a friend around another project he's working on. After that we had to rush back to uni :(.

Its a mk1 1998 Punto

you will still have the original keys and the original immobiliser will be intact, just will have another one tapped into the car which will most likely be controled by a remote key fob, that will control the central locking aswell.,.,
if hes gonna fit one of them alarms that just use the original remote cl to arm and disarm then i wouldnt bother., they just use the flashes of the indicators to determine when to arm and disarm and arent really that good.,
but probably not in your case cos your getting cl fitted.,.,

about the subs, id imagine they would have an effect on your insurance.,.

how much is it costing you for all that? cos you could do a lot of it yourself.,
the stereo is the easiest,
theres a guide for the alarm fitting which includes the remote cl if you car has key operated cl at the moment.,this isnt the easiest thing in the world but its not rocket science and all the wiring is explained.,
https://www.fiatforum.com/punto-guides/89812-alarm-fitting-te-mk1-punto.html

and the sub and amp isnt that hard either.,.,(y)

The car already has central locking - just not remote central locking (which isnt at all a neccecity, just a slight added convienience ).

It would cost:

£180 for the alarm/immobiliser/rcl
£180 for the new cd unit
£85 for front speakers
£180 for amp and sub
£50 labour

The more I mention it, the more it sounds like a rip off. A mate keeps saying he can get the amp and sub for much cheaper. None of us know how to wire it all up, but thats what makes it more interesting. Ive done alot of PC hardware modification, and recently started looking into getting to know how cars work. Would much rather to it all myself - would learn alot in the process, and save money.

Thanks for pointing to that guide - will have a good read through it, and give it a go. It doesnt look nearly as bad as i first thought.

in the least, you could do the cd player and speakers, there a novice job.,
the sub isnt much harder and theres loads of help on here about them in the ICE section.,

that could be a good 450ish quid youd save even without touching the alarm.,.,.,

Thats one heck of a saving, although the prices there, dont include labour - theyre the price of the items themselves. Looking at Halfords prices for the equipment (All equipment is by Pioneer), the prices are, give or take, the same?

About the fitting, i would rather do it myself, definately.

thats definately gonna cost you a fortune if the labour isnt included.,
do the small things yourself and if afterwards you feel confident enough you can have a go at the alarm.,.,(y)

Ive fitted a new head unit, and got it connected to the ipod...

However, its so hard to control the ipod from the head unit, so after all that, I could have just got a unit with an Aux jack.

Ive had a go at fitting door speakers in the front for a mates car - it wasnt a matter of just wiring it up - ended up using spare wire to extend the wires currently in the door, then holding the speaker in place by keeping its guard plate on, to almost jam it in the door (it was too large for the door, but now it seems to be fine).

The front speakers for £85 is a rip-off - he bought £25 speakers, and without amps or subs, the speakers handled volume of around 45 on a JVC unit - the previous speakers started going weird at 34.

Although there are no spaces for a speaker on the Punto? :s. Except for in the dashboard.

You were right - it really isnt worth paying someone else, at leas to fit the head unit, and front speakers. Those took no time at all.

Is your mark1 a 3 door or 5 door? The 3 doors could have door speakers if you get the speaker pods from a sporting/gt/ELX model...the 5 doors can have them with door pods from an ELX.

5 door - well spotted! Just did an image search for punto elx. Will look into it next weekend - the scrap yard has quite a supply of doors from Fiat's - although hardly any seem to be in good condition.

All you will really need is the doorcards from the ELX...or failing that the door pods and you can adapt your current door cards.
Oh..and the you wanna use and stuff to wire them up obviously :p
