A mate of mine has a 00 1242 8v mpi Punto and has lost the keys. FIAT want €1400 to replace the keys (and ECU etc) and that is half what the car is worth. Is there any other option? I'll send a PM to McCrich to see if his chip works on an mpi engine but I have my doubts - anyone here have this happen and what did you do?

Cheers,

David.

A fiat dealer should be able to order a new key from Fiat, italy off your chassi number and have it coded for around £50.

If theres any chance of the keys being stolen, then box the car in fast. Mate lost his at a pub, we pushed it to a nearby friends house (yes round corners and with the handbrake on:rolleyes: ). Boxed in overnight, mate went work following day, car was gone by 6pm. Found it a day later in Dagenham, stripped of ICE and dented.

I would have thought that a 2000 year car would be the two blue key type and did'nt have the red key system.

If that is the case then as stated before, Fiat should be able to source the code card and supply the keys.

you can get the ecu decoded for around £400 in the UK with a new red key.
could get a complete ecu keys and code box from a scrappy/ebay if you can find one

never used them myself though

No red key on the Mk2. And don't bother on the Mk2 with getting an ECU from scrapyard. You rather spend a lot of money than doing this.

There should be a cheaper alternative.

My wife's friend lost the one and only blue key to her 2001 Punto so she went to Fiat dealer with the parts number from under the bonnet.

The first dealer quoted a mortgage price to replace parts but the second dealer took the supplied parts number and registration number and got the code card and supplied and programmed 2 new keys. A friend owns a breakdown service and he uplifted her car and took it to the dealers garage.

BTW, I was actually given my code card (free) when I took my Punto to the dealer to get a second remote key for my Punto about 3 weeks after I bought it new, although I was led to believe that they were being withheld on instruction of insurance companies.
