I have a Mk2b 1.3 Multijet from 2003. It's 500 miles shy of 120,000 now... stamps in the book but nothing to suggest cam chain was ever replaced in the past... I did an oil change a few months ago and now it's gotten quite noisy, especially over 50mph - 2,200rpm in 5th...

What specific noises am I likely to hear if the chain is on it's way out? Are these engines normally noisy at higher speeds?

No it shouldn't be noisy, chain will rattle about as it stretch es and gets worn, worth noting there are some solid plastic tensioners which could also be worn and letting the chain rattle.

I would look at getting the chain replaced if I were you as others have seen them snap with much less miles
