Hi

I have a 2003 Punto which has been stood for 6 weeks, it now wont crank over. I have tested the battery and tried another from another vehicle same problem, half a turn of the engine with the starter then it stops. I have changed the starter motor and cleaned the earths and tried a jump lead from the battery neg to the engine block and its still the same. If I take the spark plugs out it will crank over but very slowly. Any ideas?

Not seized is it?
Not got a seized waterpump / alternator?

I'd be putting a good few squirts of engine oil into the bores and turning it over to see if this improves it

When turning the engine over by hand - does it suddenly stop?

With a good battery, if something is stopping the engine from rotating normally the head lights will dim much more noticeably than normal. If they do not dim very much you have a connection or switch problem.

Incidently I have a 2008 battery and always start my car with the headlights on and never have a problem. In Finland we drive with headlights during the day even in summer.

Job sorted thanks, I took the fan belt off and it cranked over fine. I then took the alternator off and freed the pulley with WD40 and a large spanner. All working fine now.
