Two weeks ago I was a very happy bunny when my 1.2 8v sailed through it's MOT with me only having to replace both lower ball joint covers and under seal the floor pans and polish up the headlights (which made a huge difference to night driving). I was so impressed I started looking for a replacement rear bumper as mine is really faded and lets the car down.

It seems the rotten beast has decided to repay all my hard work by eating it's own clutch this evening.:bang:

The clutch squeals when the pedal is pressed and during a run it becomes increasingly hard to get the pedal all the way down and select gears. Sometimes the clutch pedal feels like it has jammed then "pops" up again. The clutch also smells hot. I have checked the slave cylinder, which has no leaks and moves freely.

On this basis I would call this as the clutch release bearing having failed and jamming into the pressure plate. What are other people’s opinions as I always like to know what the fault is before sending it to be repaired.

My last fiat clutch failed in the same way with the release bearing actually having separated from the release fork and welded into the pressure plate, the garage were amazed it had driven the 20 miles to them with no signs of clutch failure. I have put hundreds of thousands of miles on other cars without ever having the clutch fail, only seems to happen when I buy Fiats. Is this a common problem on the Punto or am I or my wife doing something to kill the clutches.

I have had a very reasonable quote to replace the full clutch so hopefully going in in the morning. Normally I am up for trying most repairs but to be honest I don’t fancy trying to wrestle the gearbox out on my drive.

Any opinions greatfully received or just feel free to laugh just like the lads in the black 53 plate Punto did as they followed my "singing" car around the Wolverhampton ring road this evening, just remember lads it could be you next.

The bearing on the 1.2 is small and not what you'd call heavy duty, do you or your wife sit at the lights with the clutch pressed? Or ride the clutch to stay still on an incline? It's not unusual but it's not a common problem for them to fail

You'd best hope it doesn't collapse completely, the one on my son's did & It chewed up the sleeve on the gearbox which it slides on. Which is part of the 'box. oops!

All sorted.

Car went to a1 clutches this morning. Complete loss of drive this morning so a1 picked up the car and my wife.

They stripped it down very quickly and confirmed the release bearing had broken up and damaged the release fork. All replaced with a new clutch for a very fair price and now running really well. From being picked up to getting car home was just over 3 hours so amazingly quick.

Really impressed with the way they treated my wife as they showed her what was needed and the damage to the parts before they removed them rather than treating her like a clueless woman as some garages would have done.

Just out of curiosity, which A1 clutches did you use as they are very local to me

The one in Tipton, just down from the pie factory.

It is nice to be able to praise a company for giving good customer service. Does not happen as often as I would like.
