Hi there,
So I was driving around perfectly fine last night when in an absolute instant my car went from perfect to being a non runner. I had my foot on the accelerator pedal at the time and I felt it suddenly hit the floor. I managed to roll myself back into a half convenient spot to be recovered home.

Everyone is telling me that the throttle cable has snapped. I know very little about these things but I've got a mobile mechanic coming to have a look tomorrow. The accelerator pedal is now floppy and useless.

If 8V you have a cable. Snapping would be rare. What could have happened is that the outer sheath of the cable has popped out of it's bracket near the throttle body. If you look under the right side of the air filter you could see if the black throttle is loose or clipped into it's proper place.

Sounds likely. I'm not a pro when it comes to going under the bonnet. I now know that the air filter is the massive black box in the middle, but there are so many cables around it, I'm not sure which spicific cable I should be checking out (I am 8V by the way)

So I took the air filter out and found this loose wire. I got someone to watch the pedal for me, when I pull this wire, the pedal moves.

That's your throttle cable. It's either snapped or pulled out of the lug, you'll need a new cable.

They're pretty trivial to fit, there's a little metal lug crimped on one end which slides into a slot on the throttle body (you can see it there in the photo, the silver bit), and the cable is guided round the bend. The pedal end I've never had call to look at but it'll be the same thing.

Thankyou for the opinions! I've got someone coming tomorrow to take a look at it. I'm happy with any temporary fixes he can do, but the chances are then that I'll have to order an entire new throttle and pay for it to be fitted

Really no need for a new throttle body, the cable is a service item. The mechanic just needs to flick the old end of the cable out of the throttle body with a screwdriver and then route a new cable from the pedal up to the throttle body.

That is an example of the cable needed so expect about £15-£20 for the cable and 30mins to an hours labour to fit it. There is nothing wrong with your throttle body and if he tries to tell you there is send him on his way.

Agreed :)

While its got the throttle cable off

I'd be half tempted to wipe it clean internally while holding the throttle open manually :)

No engine running or bye bye wrag :)

Thanks for the advice everyone! My car was towed to a garage for free to be fixed up with a new cable
