I've just bought a clutch for an 8v punto mk2 and have just literally got it home. Just cos I had a feeling, I've just gone to check that it'll fit before opening it up to put it on the car and I think I've been sold the wrong thing.

Can someone confirm before I go phoning people up and going mental?

I've been given a National CK9100 180mm clutch. Does this sound right?

Cheers :-/

you need's, 190mm -20 spline,. if for 16 valve'r.

cheers man. Followed the link and found that out. Being as I snapped the bottom mount bolt off in the 8v today I'm scrapping the effing thing and gonna concentrate on the 16v with the leaky gearbox.

I was hoping against hope that the 8v and 16v clutches were the same as i'd already bought one for the 8.

Don't suppose you know if the gearbox is the same for both. The housing looks the same but that doesn't mean much....

Chances are the boxes are the same (but the 16v will be 6 speed). Flywheels are different (to match the clutches) but -- with a very few and rare exceptions -- can just be swapped over.

My sporting has a 5 speed box - does this mean its had a replacement gearbox at some point or did some 16v sporting's get 5 speed boxes?

you mean the bolt for the dog bone?
if so just cut a slot in subframe and weld a nut in there or threaded bar
etc..etc

iwouidnt scrap it for this reason if alls good with it.
price of puntos is worth frig all scrap so fixing it might be best option ;)

sportings all had 6 gear's. on the mk2.

never seen or heard of a 6 speed box fail on these so its weird why
the 6 box as been sacked off.

have you tried for the 6th gear perhaps someones change gear lever set up
and just stuck 5 speed one in,

reverse is definitely right and towards you and you have to squeeze the trigger to get it so I'm relatively sure its 5 speed.

I bought it in auction thinking it'd be 6 speed and was a bit peeved when it wasn't...

In other situations I'd get it sorted out out n sell it on but having two cars needing sorting is getting me down frankly. I've got the gearbox, will have the springs outta the front, a few other choice bits and the scrappers can have the rest. I'm thinking to make one good car outta the two of them now.

Don't have enough time to eff with the pair of 'em frankly...

Is it a sporting or the much later 03 active sport which I seem to think may have been a 5 speed, basically a standard punto with sporting bumpers and wheels

its a sporting but with a 5 speed. The boot says sporting as does the V5.

well since ive been here on the forum

ive seen a fair few posts of gearbox fail's. iirc all 5 speed boxes
idont rember seeing a 6 speed box fail,

I think there are two assembly lines for the boxes (at least) -- this might explain the frequent failure of input shaft bearings on the Punto 5 speeders (very rare on Cento boxes).

Still, one difference, only interesting if you're fitting an LSD, is that the 6 speed boxes have a bolt up diff, the 5 speeders a glue up diff.

Maybe someone who rebuilds boxes can tell us?
