Hi Guys

I have a 53 plate 8v punto and the airbags lights are on. when i start the car the passenger airbag light flickers and then remains lit. I have borrowed a OBDii code reader and this said there was no errors. Any ideas on what could be wrong??

Were you connecting to the airbag module with the code reader and not the engine ECU? airbag codes will not be stored on the engine ECU.

Ah ok , I was connecting to the only port i could see at the side of the steering wheel where all the fuses are. how would i connect to the airbag module?

the same port for all connectivity

what you need is a reader which can connect to the airbag unit to retrieve codes

Multi ecu scan on free edition.can connect but need.a changed cable or an adaptor

if you have a windows laptop and feel confident to download fiatmultiscan free version then load the cd that comes with the lead you are laughing
its a bit more complicated if your lappy runs xp lets us know if it does and we will try and advise further as you need net framework

i can confirm this lead is good for airbags

Try airbag lock on the right side,maybe there is loose connection

For us without pc know how, how much for a dealer to reset, or anyone near worthing, BN11, able to help me with mine?

Where is that airbag lock that I can look at?

He means the passenger isolation switch
on rhd cars open passenger door and its on the dash where the door covers

If its the yellow light then the key switch should sort it
if the red light is on you need a diagnostic read

Yes

Even if it was because the battery went too low one time, the punto is abit gay in that sense as it wants clearing before the code airbags will re-activate

The punto doesn't have a self resetting airbag ecu
So if a fault re-occours, you will have to pay to clear it again

the alternative, is buy a Suitable cable + adaptors
Download FES/MES (fiat/Multi Ecu scan) and connect yourself and see what it thinks is up

It did have a flat battery, new one fitted so perhaps that was the cause? Any idea what charge to expect from the dealer to reset as I'm not software savvy myself to do it.

I had this come up on mine the other day, both the yellow light and the red light, i took it into the garage for them to check and he said there was a fault with the passenger airbag switch, so he turned it off, he said that it was not a major issue when its off and would be able to pass an mot like that but if it is on and then it goes into an mot it will fail, as the mot now tests the airbags.

And switched on or off the switch can still cause a fault.

Tech savvy or not resetting the light is very easy to do and for the bits needed will cost about the same as getting a garage to reset it just once, so it really is a false economy to pay someone else to do it

just to add to andys excellent post ive had 2 puntos this past month that have had their airbag ecus spiked by i guess jump leads
the only cure was replacement ecus with matching numbers from the scrapyard as the only cost effective cure
so my advice to all as usual with all modern cars is never use jump leads to start a car with a flat battery

I have a 03 reg stilo and I had the airbag failure and red light airbag on and I asked the dealer to fix it. He told me that he reset it and now the red light is off. However now the yellow passenger airbag is on! It is not flickering and then stay still like in the video above but it is fixed all the time. I understand that by turning on and off the switch on the passenger side (see second video) I would resolve the problem am I correct?
Alternatively I should follow the resetting procedure and I am done? (I understood that if it is only the yellow light then I don't need to have the car checked)
