Hi guys

Did a short journey to the supermarket just now, parked up and had some difficulty getting from Drive to Park.

Returned to the car 10 minutes later, started the car no problem, turned lights on, but no way could I shift from Park to any position!!

I noticed the following:

1. The dash speedometer/RPM counter not illuminated
2. RPM counter on zero despite engine revs.
3. The clock LCD display was alternating LCD numbers displayed/not displayed - I was going to use the workd flashing.
4. the E button on the gear selector was flickering.
5. All lights worked normally.

Had to leave the car in the car park.

Very strange, seems like a fuse. Any ideas?

Cheers

John

Thanks Dave, it's all rather strange!

Not had any work done on the car and it's been working fine until this one incident.

I have AA relay and the car's just a mile from home so at least I can get it back!

It's a 2001 - so I probably posted in the wrong section!

Cheers

AA man should have a code reader, make sure he writes them down for you to post if he finds any.
He should also be able to manually remove the gate on gear leaver that normally comes off when you press brake, if there is an electrical fault that wont move on its own.

Okay, here's an update - might help anyone finding themselves in a similar position.

AA man attended and discovered fuse F57 had blown. F57 is a 5.5amp fuse and control such things as instrument & instrument lights also brake lighs. However, rplacing the fuse and depressing the brake pedal again instantly blew the new fuse.

The AA man removed the switch from beneath the brake pedal and disconnected the 2 cables attaching to it, he replaced the switch & fitted a new fuse, this time the fuse remained in tact when the brake pedal was depressed. The instrument panel worked properly and so did the shift.

However, I now have both the seatbelt warning light flashing constantly and the airbag warning light is continuously on.. The car is driveable as before except for these to warning lights.

The AA guy has no idea why removing the switch rectified the fuse blowing problem.

Cheers

John

my thinking
theres a problem with brake light filaments /earthing issue in rear lights
suggest change bulbs and clean all contacts
the high resistence could cause the problems you describe and removing fuse could have by replacing it caused circuit to refunction but if rear lights not checked problem will re appear
as regards airbags maybe aa man removed airbag fuse with ignition on causing malfunction lights to appear?

you will need fes to turn airbag lights off
andyreckit has a link to what to do see if its in his profile
