decided to scan the punto today and no faults (y)
i did notice that the car limits at 7160rpm!
i thought they max out at 6750rpm?
can anyone confirm this?

ah right, wow they rev really high for a 1.2!

I believe the 8v's are built to with stand 9K rpm

But fiat limited them because after 6.5K this is No gain except wear and waste of fuel
Plus it'd not sound happy....

Anyway - 16'v usually are abit more revvy because they can get the gasses in and out a hella lot quicker
double the ports - double the speed of intake and exhaust

i can never understand why anyone would want to bounce valves on a stood engine
if anyone comes to me and tries it they get one warning only
probably the same reason i dont deal in the 16valve engines as i have no time for bone heads

no offence azzam ill let you off this time

Does revving your car this high not cause serious damage and wear to the engine in the long run?? So many people on here seem to talk about revving the engine to the max, and it makes me wonder how long their car will last...

I've only been driving about 6 months, and although I went through the initial "speed demon" stage I've always tried not to rev any more than 3000rpm, simply to preserve the engine and keep the fuel costs down. Is this being a little too cautious? It is only a 1.2 after all?

my tuned mk2a is always on limiter (7000rpm) and i have 165000 and the engine is fine.... i never get down to 3000rpm xaxa
so dont be afraid... only for the price of the fuel :cool:

the 7150rpm is because sometime somewhere for some reasons you passed the limiter, perhaps on a shiftdown maybe... (mine says 10200:p , its better than v tec xaxaxa) its a fault from the older owner, he shifted down to 2hd gear instead of 4th :p

All engines are different
IE some punto 8v stop at 6250 rpm - some will go to 6500 some just squeeze past further

It all depends on condition age etc etc

And wragging a car is a way of making it wear more YES
BUT
in the right conditions
Ie a Good condition cooling system
A decent oil
and allowed to warm up properly before been ragged aint too much of an issue

I reguarly thrashed my old mk2a - it was just a dozey engine that didnt care what you did :)

they have cast control rings that are brittle ,these engines are not designed to be revved to valve bounce with no load
no family cars are
they are designed for power versus economy if you want a track engine then build a track engine

With this in mind, what would you suggest the maximum revs should be during normal driving before you start to put too much strain on the engine? Obviously people will see this differently, but do you think 3000rpm is a little overcautious?

This is obviously a trivial matter, I am just interested to hear different peoples opinions on the subject :D

no i think you are spot on at 3000 max
im talking 8 valve though not header 16v

Car will treat you the way you treat it. Revving out to the max in each gear will shorten the life but once it's fully warmed up you can do it the odd time.:D Don't go the other way and rev too low. Labouring the motor can cause damage to piston skirts and cylinder bores. When accelerating ,if the car doesn't respond to squeezing ( not stomping) the pedal you're probably in too high a gear and I've yet to see serious mpg study that didn't recommend getting up speed through the gears 'briskly'.:D

Good to know that I'm not being paranoid about things :D Yeah, I've got the 8v, wouldn't push such a small motor any more than this. If I had the 16v I may have considered hitting 4000 on duel carriageways, motorways etc.

Thanks :)

Of course no manufactor design a car to sit at the factory set red line all day
What i meant to say is - that the engine will let you, and it'll be happy too
but yes - espically if there is a bore lip, you're asking for trouble

I odd red line as said before wont hurt that much
Just the wallet as that needle with fuel written next to it - slams to empty again....

On the semi-automatic Speedgear 'box, the Economy button limits the revs to 4,300... -- and, to be honest, it's very rare you need more than that... (unless you're undertaking (ahem) a particularly 'brave' piece of overtaking...). ;)

do you see the petrol logo as a '£' instead?:p lol its only a 1.2 so the petrol will be cheap enough redlining compared to idle speed on my tr7 v8 haha

long story short hit the limiter (driving!) to clean out your exhaust and intake manifold haha

I must admit, having got rid of a 3.1 litre diesel 4x4 that did 26 mpg on a good day, I now drive my Punto with the display firmly set to show how economical (or not) I'm being...!

And I still can't get over the fact that it will do well over 50 mpg on the motorway... (and I averaged over 54, the other day, on super unleaded (equivalent to only 12p per mile...): trying to "clean out my exhaust", etc. for its MOT...)!
