Punto 1.2 16v engine change help

The missis' engine is absolutely knackered and I'm going to change the whole lot as it's not just the head that needs attention.

So I've been looking a bit online to find out which engine fits correctly
There are four variants.

(1) (2000 - 2003), 1.2 Petrol Engine, 16 Valve, with AC, with the cam sensor on the rocker cover

(2) (2000 - 2003), 1.2 Petrol Engine, 16 Valve, without AC, with the cam sensor on the rocker cover

(3) (2000 - 2003), 1.2 Petrol Engine, 16 Valve, with AC, without the cam sensor on the rocker cover

(4) (2000 - 2003), 1.2 Petrol Engine, 16 Valve, without AC, without the cam sensor on the rocker cover

The engine in the punto currently is number 4 , without air con and no cam sensor in the rocker cover . So I know what I'm looking for but I just wondered why I cant get any of the other engines, let's say I get a engine with air con and cam sensor in rocker cover. Can I not just leave the cam sensor blocking the hole up in as there will be no wiring for it. And unbolt the aircon unit and use the appropriate aux belt?

Also I can't find any way of releasing the pressure from the fuel pump. Is there a way to this manually or is there some sort of valve the self releases the pressure?

Other than that I'm ready to tackle it :-)

I can't help with engine details.

On the fuel rail you will see a shraeder (tyre) valve for pressure testing and pressure release.

With any engine get the associated ECU, BCU and ignition key transporter. That way it will work in your car.

Re: Punto 1.2 16v engine change help

Every one of them will fit, just needs time and effort. AC remove the ac unit and mount. No cam sensor hole? Swap the extension...

I don't know what car you have but as you said it has the cam sensor it must be 2000 onwards. An engine from a 2001 Bravo and 1.2 Stilo also fit as these are from the same era and use the same engine with different mounts, crank pulleys etc

On a final note, here is my 2001 Punto Sporting (with AC) with a 1997 Sporting engine installed. Anything can be installed with the right bits (I don't recommend the 1997 engine though due to the work involved)

Anythings possible

Re: Punto 1.2 16v engine change help

The air con I have solved and figured out it will work with just unbolting the air con unit and using the apropriate aux belt for an engine without air con and swapping the alternator.

The cam sensor is confusing me, am I right in thinking my engine in the car at the moment does not have a cam sensor at all but just a crankshaft sensor so when I install the newer engine with a cam sensor , I can just leave the cam sensor in the rocker cover as I do not have the wiring for it so it should work normal as the older knackered engine does. If that makes sense lol

yes
you might need to swap all ancillaries off your engine though just in case
the pulley for the crank sensor might be different too so see if you can fit this on your engine if its behind the belt pulley

basically fit everything as much as you can off your engine just so it will start on the key
use your ecu too of course

Re: Punto 1.2 16v engine change help

Yes I will be swapping all ancillaries over to match the existing engine as much as I can, I will be putting my inlet etc off the old engine onto the new engine.

I thought the older engine without the cam sensor on the rocker cover does not have a cam sensor at all but just a crank sensor or am I wrong and there is a cam sensor on the pulley behind the timing cover.
The newer engine which does have the cam sensor on the rocker cover can just be left unplugged and not used therefor blanking it off. This would then make it identical to the old engine (having no cam sensor)
