just about to do the service on my punto 1.2 16v sporting.

iv been using magnatec but from what i hear this isnt a good oil for my engine.

some one point me in the right direction as to what oil is best for my engine?(y)

thanks in advance:)

you just want a decent 10w40 semi synentic if its a 1997 model.

dont listen to people who tell you otherwise, my sporting is on 140,000 and the engines never been apart, it runs 100%, no smoke, no noise, no tapping and its been ran on 10w40 semi since new.

what one you choose? well it really doesnt matter to be fair, magnetec will be fine but lots of people on here dont like it, but its all hearsay really, bmw ONLY use castrol, and well when do you ever hear of there engines going wrong?

millers, silkolene, shell, carlube, mobil 1

any of them i use.

by the way.

running carlube at £12 per 5L changing it every 6 months will be better than running mobil1 at £24 per 5L changing annually.

if you understand that, what im saying is what ever you use, change every 6 months if you want it to be 'the best' oil, using cheaper oil and making more frequant changes will be better than using more expensive stuff with not so frequant changes.

those prices are made up btw, just an example.

Well my 16v on 10w40 is quite tapptey. Magnetic DOES cause sludge due to it's sticky nature. I'll be running mine on 5w30 fully synth soon.

yeah that's why they revised their tech sheets to say use Selenia K 5w40 in 16v fire engines

if you put a 1997-99 punto 16v in fiat dealer for a service, it comes out with 10w40 semi.

like iv said, my punto 16v is on 140k and its always been ran on 10w40, it does not tap at all, absolutly runs 100%.

5w40 can be used, but at the end of the day, it is the wrong oil.

what ever you do, do not use 5w30.

just because fiat release the revisions don't mean the dealer does what they say, my local dealer dsalmon tried to sell me selespeed gear oil for a speedgear because that's all he had an didn't want to order in a box of the right stuff because there is no demand for it, they also tried to sell me the wrong oil for a manual box, it dont mean i could have used them,

same dealer put 5w30 in some ones 100hp https://www.fiatforum.com/panda/204540-new-oil-100hp-4.html?p=2358138

that's bad, so dealer doing don't always mean its right!

to be fair dave, 10w40 or 5w40 both will be absolutly fine, 100%, but when people think putting 10w40 in makes it tappy, they are completly wrong.

i think we need to explain to the other guy 5w30 is too thin for this engine.

i know you would use 10w40 over 5w30 anyday.

think you must be blind, the link is to a direct post by the sultan, #5

and later on in that thread he explains more clearly.

if you put 10w40 into a new 16v engine they get noisy tappets i have had many people come in at work with this problem and I have put 5w30 in there cars again this makes them quiet again

what i find with older 16 engines is when they were new 10w40 was fine

and normally a good quality 10w40 is still fine today for these but now and again we get a noisy one at work but after servicing with 5w30 and a good run they are quiet again

he quite clearly says 10w40 is fine on the older 16v, like yours, and a good 10w40 is still fine today, which fiat recommend 10w40, if you want to argue any more discuss it with fiat, they decided to use 10w40 on the mk1 punto, so take them to court if you disagree. thank you.

Listen, I didn't ask for your opinion in the first place. I merely stated what I would be doing and you decided to weigh in stating not to use it like you know what you're talking about. 5w30 is fine.

Bloody BM drivers, all the same....

im making sure the person who started the thread is fully aware not to use 5w30 as it is too thin for a 16v engine, these little engines run pretty hot, 30 grade oil will be too thin when upto running temp.

and to be fair... i know what im talking about.
