Ok, i've taken the plunge and read the diagnostic fault codes on my HGT and was wondering if someone could help to explain whats wrong! (this is in relation to my car not starting as from this thread https://www.fiatforum.com/punto/214089-where-start-need-friendly-garage.html)

The codes that are displayed are:

1 - N/A - what does n/a mean in this context?
2 - P0302 - cylinder 2 misfire detected
3 - P0325 - knock sensor 1 circuit malfunction bank 1 or sensor 1
4 - P0335 - crankshaft position sensor a circuit malfunction
5 - P0340 - camshaft position sensor a-bank 1 circuit malfunction
6 - P1653 - no idea its not in my book???

I also read the I/M monitor status with my reader which said Misfire not ready.

Does anyone have any thoughts, the car just wont start!? Thanks.

P1653 Camshaft position (phase) regulation
P1653 Phase variator

Ok so anyone know what the problem could be? or how to narrow it down? I've looked on shop4parts and the crankshaft sensor is ok at about £20 (is there a fitting guide anywhere?) but if its the camshaft sensor then its £80! any advice?

The faults read from the diagnostics are just sensor readings, they are not definite problems.

I'd start by replacing the crank sensor, and seeing if the problems go.

thanks for the reply mike, is there any guide for doing this on the hgt? Thanks.

if not definate why replace part(s)? why not check the crank sensor toprove the fault is there.
thanks for your reply, how would I test the sensor?

on a slight side note, is there a way I can check the timing is correct on the cam belt?

it hasnt been replaced, but it's recently had the cam belt cover off to check an oil leak and i'm wondering if it's slipped or anything like that. Is there a way to check?

btw, by examiner do you mean get it checked by a fiat dealer?

Thanks.

ok i've deleted all the codes, tried to start the engine which just turned over and didnt start, rescanned for codes - the reader said there were none??! does that mean its the crank sensor? (i'm hoping it isn't the camshaft sensor)...

would it do this if the cam belt had slipped and the timing was off?

hmmm, I get the feeling its going to be either the crank sensor or the cam sensor but there's no way for me to tell either way :( think i'll just have to get someone out to diagnose it somehow grrr!

btw, is there a guide anywhere on changing the crank sensor on a hgt - is it difficult?

TBH you also need to be sure the cam belt is ok. They can strip teeth and retard the cam timing.

That said when mine lost about 50 teeth and bent some valves there were no error message on the instrument panel.

What sort of state is the accessory belt in? If its looking perished - 10:1 the cam belt will be getting tooth-ache.
