Had the codes read on my JTD Punto today as it randomly doesn't unimmobilise itself. When I put the key in and turn the ignition sometimes the key light doesn't go out. The codes stored are: P0601: ECU Defect (EEPROM) U1600: Electronic Key If I want to start the car (once the ignition is on and the key symbole hasnt gone out) I have to turn the ignition off and pop the key out slightly, turn the radio on (It comes up with 'CHECK') then when the radio comes on it will start as normal. Any ideas?

U1600- Electronic key-immobiliser system fault.

I was also getting this fault code occasionally... dealer said its to do with the plastic bit which sits around the ignition barrel and picks up the signal from the key, used to de-activate the immobilizer.

Its not a definite fault but a sign that this plastic ring shaped component isnt always recognising the key.

Was yours replaced and did it cure it?

mine never had a problem starting, but that is what the dealer says it is.

and dont know now i got rid of it
