Hey my cars messed up

i keep getting a metalic rattle from centre of car up close to where front seats are the sounds are coming from below the car?

I went to local exhaust centre and they tighted the exhaust clamps etc and it still rattles, it rattles in low gears and every time i hit big bump?

Could it be heat shield anyone had similar?

Its like as if something metalic is being lifted then dropped if you know what i mean?

Hello,

Yep its probably the heat shield (as mentioned) or part of the exhaust touching somewhere. I've had so much hassle and countless exhausts on my car to cure various rattling/blowing noises. My theory is that (on the Mk.1 anyway) there just aren't enough mounts along the length of the car for the exhaust, for it to be strong and positioned accurately.

Also check that its not hitting on the rear suspension or rear bumper.
Could also be the baffles inside the exhaust, it seems that the exhausts from most fast fit type outlets are not very good quality and are designed to last about 6 months (Says he with a 4 month old exhaust that is now has a slight blow somewhere near the front).

Hey mate thanks for the reply

had a look in car...

the rattle from the front was from my radiator (think its the radiator... the bit with fan connected) was right loose and the bolt that holds it on is almost away to fiat heaven...

...and the rattle from the rear... is the rear heat shield i think as the almighty deamon rust has ate away from around the bolt so need to make a big washer or something so that it secures it again... or alternativly i go to scrappies and get myself a new rear heat shield

hope sum info may help ya!!!

I've got the same problem i usually get it when i pull off from parking or if i go over a hump or have a few people in the car with me.

I just dont know what it is + i know the exhaust is rusting so it'l need a new one pretty soon :(

To prove where the noise is coming from, take it to your garage and while its on the lift get them to "bash" the two silencers. If the baffles are loose you should be able to clearly hear it. Unfortunately, in my case every time they've done this it has rattled and they have then said that will be 180 pounds please!

180 quid for an exhaust on a MK1?? I paid 77 quid on a sunday fitted!

I had the same problem with the loud rattling which was especially noticeable when pulling off, but sometimes did it when idling. It was the heatshield the sits between the floorpan and exhaust right down the length of the car. It had rotted around the bolts so was just suspended there...Made some nice bit washers out od bits of metal i found and now its sorted :) (for free ;) )

Yes I did pay that much. And have the receipts to prove it. £77 sounds like a bargain!
After many issues with rattling my local garage warned me that if I brought it back again they would rip all the shielding off - and I don't know what effect this would have in heating up the cars interior! Luckily I haven't asked them to fix any rattle so it has stayed as the car left the factory!

I get this same rattle...

Happens when going at a slow speed 10mph

What could i use to tighten this myself? - Rope?
