My horn has stopped working on my 03 punto, will this be a case of just changing a fuse etc if so whats the best way to go about!

Hi mate,

Start with the fuse, then move on to check the connections at the horn itself. If they are fine, then check you are getting 12v at the horn with a multimeter. If you are, then you need a new horn (bout £8 and dead easy to change only 1 10mm bolt to undo) If not getting 12v at the horn, then you need to start looking at the switch on the steering wheel and or BCU/Relay. This however is a little more involved, so i would suggest the above first.

Its common for the horn unit to pack up at this time of year due to all the moisture/ road grime.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Open the fuse box wherever it is the the mkII. On the plastic cover, there should be a diagram indicating which fuse does what. Identify the horn fuse and pull it out. Look to see that the fuse wire is still intact.

Failing that, get (or borrow) a digital multimeter and use the continuity test to identify where the problem is. The switch on the steering wheel should be checked first. Remove the switch and put the multimeter on the terminals. Squeeze the switch and the multimeter should beep if it is working properly. If not, replace horn switch. If this is not the problem, then I am afraid I do not know the mkII well enough to trace the fault any deeper. Await assistance from other forum members.

The fuse for the horn is located in the engine bay fuse box (right hand side of engine bay) If you remove the plastic cover, and look inside it, all of the fuses are listed in there. IIRC its a 15amp mini blade fuse on the left hand bank of fuses.

EDIT: I personally would start by checking the horn unit (in engine bay) first, as checking the switch requires removal of the airbag etc which is dangerous and needs to be done correctly. Most of the time its just the horn unit thats gone. Very common

Alan

EDIT EDIT: Incase you dont know, the horn unit is located in the front left of the engine bay, just to the right of the drivers side (uk) headlight. Its has 2 wires with spade connectors on it, and is bolted to the front slam pannel via a 10mm bolt and a small metal bracket.

Engine bay fusebox looks like this......(with the cover removed)

Hi mate,

Halfords, Petrol Station, any car accessory shop/ motor factors will have them. You want the "mini blade" type rather than standard. Will cost about a quid for a pack of 5 or so.

Hi guys

Similar problem with my horn ...except I test the horn itself directly connecting it ..and it works -earth is ok too. Fuse seems to be ok ....someone has suggested the ?"tape wire around the steering wheel" was his words. "Sparrow wire"??? Does that make any sense to anyone? Apparently that connection can go wrong so it is suggested that I get a new unit which a dealer quoted at £120!!

Does anyone have any ideas on what else I could check ...or what exactly this unit is so perhaps I could do a quick search on ebay/scrap yards etc.

cheeers

PS Have Mk2 Xreg Punto.

PPS does it need a horn to be roadworthy??

I'd be checking the Relay - as the horn works - fuse is good - relay is next cheapest

and yes horns is MOT failure if it dont work
however nothing says the switch has to be on the steering wheel? Just wire a new horn setup in and stick a switch on the Kick pannel
Sorta like this
