Hi All

My Son has just got a Mk 2 X reg Punto.

Has any one changed the cam belt on a Mk 2 Punto 1242cc 8v engine
I have done this on older fords, but note that the Haynes manual recommend
You get the tension check by fiat, does any one know a way to check the tension On this engine, and is it correct that if the belt breaks no damage is done to the 8v engine. also would you also change the Water pump at the same time.

Regards Roger

tension is not as critical as haynes make out, you can simply apply some common sense. the tension of the old belt is a good indicator of the tenison you need.

i would change the water pump only if it was
-leaking
-showing play or roughness in the bearing
-more than 100k miles old

the valves will hit the pistons if the belt snaps or the timing is out.

Lol jug its a fire design engine and thats just what the engine is designed not to do :D also if you are changing the belt and the engine has a fairly high mileage I WOULD change the water pump as retensioning a new belt can put a stain on the old pumps bearings and the pump COULD follow on with the bearing collapsing ..always better safe that sorry in a situation like this ..you will have to strip it down again if the pump dies after and usually with a new belt due to contamination :)
