I see many post about rusty oil sump pans on pandas, just wondered WHY is this? Never seen this problem before ever! What's going on and is this more common than I fear?

Because they're made from thin steel with poor corrosion resistance.

Salt on the roads causes them to rust from the outside.

Timely prevention is the key to not having this problem. Remove any flaking rust and treat with whatever corrosion proofer takes your fancy.

Rusty sump pans can be repaired and a replacement is not silly money. Back axles are a much bigger issue but the same rules apply.

So if you change your own oil, wipe a rag with some of the old oil on it over the sump every time you do so.
Free, and problem solved.

It's not just Fiats. The wife's old Focus had this problem and judging from the number of sellers on ebay it's pretty common. What was shocking was the price a main dealer quoted to change it. Seems they were quting labour for someone to watch the sealant dry for 3 hours before putting th oil in.

If that was the good old BL Mini the sump was the aluminium cased gearbox.

I replaced the sump on an Austin Montego. Not including jacking up etc, the job took me about an hour. But there was no under tray and no fancy subframe built to meet current crash regulations.

Oh! That would explain it then!!

This is the later 69bhp model but surprisingly not costly.

I think that the exhaust pipe gets in the way of certain models sumps, check before committing yourself.
