General Had an incident....

Cheers :).

Out of interest, I just had a look at the Panda's NCAP score and video. The test was conducted on a 1.2 model with only one airbag, which came out of the steering wheel.

Here's the video of the test if anyone fancies a look at how a Panda holds up in an accident:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UMnIdOZ6FM

Firstly, commiserations on the wheel. It's not quite as bad as binning the car. And you're safe and well.

I saw that video a few years back. I've always wondered about the child seats in the back. They don't appear to have been put into the car too well. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think there would have been the same amount of movement in the Group 1 seat I used. The group 2-3 seats I'm currently using use isofix to hold them so I wouldn't expect a load of movement on them either.

Audi drivers are, I am a HGV driver and I'd say 95% of inconsiderate/rude/ignorant and dangerous driving that I see are Audi drivers.

I try not to judge people by the car they are driving although sometimes it's difficult.

Example:
People with powerful cars tend to flash a lot more than they should. Why flash repeatedly if you are still 10km away moron?

Another, people living in places such as Rome where all streets are narrow yet buying cumbersome SUV, that's really smart.

Annoyingly the wheel that was ruined was in perfect condition, unlike at least one of the others which I curbed trying to parallel park in a rush (oops...)!

The child seats do look very loose in the back of that car, maybe kids seats were different back in 2004? Honestly, having no children and my only sibling being my 17 year old sister, my child seat knowledge is almost non-existent .

How ruined is ruined? is it not referbishable?
From my experience with 100hp wheels, moderate potholes cause fair flat-spots. I'd think a decent kerbing would certainly make it irrecoverable.

Punto wheels are the saviour..............

Speaking from experience.......I've done 3 avoidance techniques over the years:

1. The Kerb
2. The sharp turn and roll (Mk1 panda, somersaulted sideways)
3. The side impact into the other car

Results:

1. Hurt pride and damaged wheel/suspension
2. Not a scratch and my car a write-off
3. Kneecap turned into muesli, fractured vertebra and car a write-off

On the whole, I'd choose the kerb avoidance technique, with obvious caveats.

The fact that Matt can avoid going through the insurance is probably a benefit, though it will not look that way right now. Both insurers would have pushed for shared blame and his future insurance options compromised.

Best to focus on fixing the car and looking forward. Easier said than done.

MORE PUNTO WHEELS
Quite why people use the plural 'wheels' without obviously stating the number is beyond me.

Joking aside, the instinct of survival would have led me do the same.

The 3rd incident you described sounds very painful!

Here's an arty shot (on the Fosse Way...)
Don't look as good or 'right' as the original ones...but not bad....

I agree - the standard 100Hp wheels are very nice indeed. But...........at the end of the day it's still just a car. Transport. And you rarely see them when you're driving....

I had a very similar incident back in October or thereabouts, was nearly home one night and going straight on at a dual carriageway roundabout, I was in the second land and some idiot in the first, went into the roundabout at the same time but, sadly for me, she (it was a woman driving, not that I'll generalise) headed into my lane rather than stick to the outside... As I'm quite observant and anticipate these things, I took evasive action and hit the kerb on the inside of the roundabout, instant puncture on the front but from the sound of the impact I thought the wheel had shattered! Luckily it was just the tyre.

Of course, despite me peeping and flashing, she drove off (n)

Honestly, I think most people's reaction these days is to leave the scene ASAP, as opposed to stopping and handing over their details. Annoyingly, they know they'll almost certainly get away with it !

I'm glad to hear it was just a tyre for you, at least some one got (sort of) lucky in a Panda vs curb incident :).

Well not sure you'd have a case to demand their details sadly, unlike if you'd let the accident happen, it was more a case of wanting to "express my dissatisfaction" with their driving. In any case I was needing new front tyres anyway, tracking got done with service the next month (along with the other tyre), and I'd just been paid that day. So could've been worse...

Also annoyingly I do have a RoadHawk camera, but it was off at the time as I was having a few issues with it.

My wheels are in need of a refurb (thinking of getting them done in black while they're at it) but that'll have to wait until later in the year when I can save up for that.

Not so, if its a clear 100% blame on the other party then this wouldn't not be the case, and is another reason why dashcam footage can be invaluable.

Then why, when one of our cars was T-boned by a car turning right out of a junction into our car on the main road and with written witnesses, did our insurer try to suggest we go for 50:50? It was only when I insisted that I would not accept this and they can bloody well take the matter to court using my legal protection that the matter was fully settled with no blame on our part.

Nobody should assume they know what the insurers will try to do. Assume the worst.

That'll most probably be due to being with a crap insurer. If the fault is 100% clear then they'll not go down the 50/50 route as it'll cost them more money overall as they'll be able to recover all costs from the other side if they don't go down this route.

If liability isn't 100% clear cut then they'll suggest this route as it can be cheaper sometimes than the cost of legal proceedings against the other side, which have to be weighed up against the likly hood and value of a full recovery of the claim cost.

It has also been known to be a few companies out there who will try 50/50 if they're insuring both parties involved as it'll cost them the same for the claim regardless of liability but they can then reduce NCD of both parties and then try and claw the loss back through increased renewal premiums etc come renewal time.

DirectLine, in case anyone is interested. I don't recall the ombudsman providing a list of crap insurers so I was unable to assess their service beforehand. When I look at the various forums, for anyone who's had a claim it seems most insurers are crap.

It took 3 days from me advising DirectLine to proceed with a court case for them to capitulate. This was 11 months after the incident.

Everyone - you have been warned.

Seems to be a trend for viewing insurers as friends. They're friends like banks!
They are out to make profit, and in doing so will eagerly take your money and grudgingly pay out after exhausting all delaying tactics and quoting the small print.
Some may be marginally less worse than others, but friends - never!
