Hello folks

The clutch fluid in my 100HP is a horrible murky yellowy-brown colour so I decided to drain it and replace it with fresh DOT 4.

I removed the battery and tray to get to the clutch fluid bleeding nipple, which is situated on the slave cylinder, located on top of the gear box.

The bleed screw is a grub screw that is undone with a 4mm allen key. The bleed nipple is next to the screw.

I am using a Gunson Eezibleed to bleed the system. I syringed out the old fluid from the reservoir and checked the air-tightness of the Eezibleed set-up first.

I attached a piece of hose to the bleed nipple and slowly opened the bleed screw, but instead of the fluid coming out the nipple, it started leaking up around the grub screw.(n)

I have tried poking a needle in the nipple to clear it but this has made no difference.:bang:

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Regards

Paul

Here is a pic of the bleed screw and bleed nipple location:

The bleed nipple has a transparent drain hose on it but no fluid comes out of the hose. It just wells up around the silver grub screw.

I did this not long ago on both my Panda 1.2 & my 500 (the clutch hydraulic systems are identical). My fluid was shot after 18 months. The thread is here:

https://www.fiatforum.com/500/287720-sediment-clutch-master-cylinder.html?p=2908842

and there are some useful pictures in post #10. I managed to complete the job with the battery in-situ.

I also noticed the fluid wanted to leak from the screw in preference to the nipple. The easiest way round this problem is to vacuum bleed it - I used one of these:

http://www.tools4trade.com/d-4504407-sealey-vacuum-pressure-testbleed-kit-vs403.aspx

but there are cheaper alternatives that work the same way.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I found your thread very helpful. I don't know if you have a 100HP as well but the battery tray is directly above the slave cylinder on mine and I couldn't get anywhere near it.

I think there may be a manufacturing defect with my slave cylinder. I sealed the clutch reservoir with duct tape to create a vacuum and took the bleed-screw out. I then poked a large needle into the bleed nipple hole to see if it would come through to where the bleed screw sits. But it won't go in very far at all.

It seems as if there is a severe blockage or that something is wrong.

I don't think the clutch fluid has been drained at all and my car is 4 1/2 years old:eek:

I might have to take the slave cylinder off and inspect it properly, is there a guide to removing an refitting it? I have tried the search bout haven't found anything.

It is on both my cars too - I had to work completely by feel, but mine was straightforward once I'd located the allen key in the screw & the tubing on the nipple.

That's always possible (though it begs the question as to how they bled it in the factory ).

I can't quite believe I'm suggesting this, but now that you've removed the battery & battery tray, you could improvise by getting a bunch of rags or paper towels to catch/mop up the fluid & just pressure bleed it through the screw - it will be messy but you should still be able to get a good bleed. Fluid capacity isn't that great & you'll only need to force through about 200ml to get the air out. Be sure to wash the whole area down thoroughly afterwards - brake fluid is corrosive. Hot soapy water will do just fine.

In the end I had to do almost that. I followed this guide:

https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo-guides/86395-bleeding-1-6-clutch-slave-cylinder.html

I pulled the clip from the clutch fluid hose and pulled the hose out slightly. I had put lots of kithcen roll and old towel around to soak up the fluid, and used the Eezibleed to bleed it out.

I still didn't get anything from the bleed nipple, it just came out from the hose joint.

When I take the car in for its next service I will ask the dealer to bleed it again and check that everything is O.K.

Thanks for the help(y)
