General Hillclimbing and Sprinting the 100hp

Back from Aintree, had a super day, won my class of 1! Very pleased that I got within 1.7 seconds of the class record held by a 106 rallye, what a great little car it is, on a warmer day with a tail wind and if I squint a bit a class record might just be achievable.

Glad you had a decent day. Very wet in the south west and no dry runs. Very slippery and difficult to judge where the grip is, so unnerving when you have to drive the car home and I was a coward! Got within a couple of seconds of the class lead, but slower than most. Some people spend A LOT on quick minis.

Thing with the mini is they can be made so lightweight. I guess your class structure isn't as good as ours 'oop' north if you're having to run against modded minis, tough day. I've been told the AX GT entered in my class tomorrow weighs 740kg, 200kg lighter than the Fiat, suspect I'm going to struggle.

Another good day in the 100hp, won the class. Keep getting asked if it's 4 wheel drive, not many people seem to know what it is. Struggled in the tight turns getting the power down, just spun the inside wheel. Needs a better technique than I have.

Good stuff. Could you post a link to the results when they're available?

And what tyres did you put on the car in the end? Everyone else yesterday had Yoko 048s or Toyo R888s and I felt a little left out!

Yokohama AD08, 195/50/15. Good grip for a 1A tyre, looking rather melted now though. Really need to figure out a better technique for tight turns, any thoughts?

Will post a link to results when available. Entered at Thoresby Park next weekend, Nottingham Sports Car Club event, end of the season for me.

And not too far off the class record (set by a much lighter car). Interesting about the AD08s, might invest at the beginning of next season but they would need to cope with a long daily commute.

Times from Wiscombe below. Quite close in the wet third run, but couldn't keep up when it got drier. All very close though.

1A is a tough class to be in. The class 1A hot shot up here was 4 secs faster than me. SA and SB are quite new classes and have been successful up here, maybe they will be adopted by your local clubs in the future. You need to get lobbying, 15% of the entry at 3 sisters came from those 2 classes, half of them novices, so brings new drivers into the sport as well.

Yes, usually I'm about 4 secs slower than the very quickest (48 secs rather than my 52 secs), but a bit closer in the wet. I competed last year against someone who I know is decent and was running a standard'ish ZR in the MGCC series; I was only 0.7 adrift.. so probably not too far off SA pace (if it existed). And with better tyres.....

Just about the only thing that annoys me is the complete mish-mash of classes and regulations. There are no standard classes in the South West, although some run classes in the South East (no hills). However, the engine cc split in the standard class is at 1600 and the regs are even tighter than yours (uprated dampers etc aren't allowed). A Honda Civic "Jordan" would be perfect! I did raise it last year but it wasn't seen as being important. Why is it so hard to be consistent?

Another example is that our southern events allow 1B tyres in their "road going" classes whereas your regs don't - makes a massive difference.

I'll pick and choose events that I enjoy, and as long as I keep getting quicker then I'm happy.

Hope Thoresby Park goes well.

Have you looked at the Service Hydraulics Speed Championship:

http://speedchampionship.org.uk/

It's a national championship, they have an SA class and also go to Wiscombe. Wouldn't change the class outcome on the day but at least you would score championship points against other SA cars. From the regs:

"the scores calculated for The Service Hydraulics Speed Championship will be based on the Championship classes, and not the classes run on the day"

Looks like there are 38 qualifying rounds, bound to be some others near you, if you do less than 8 your best 5 scores count. There are 6 contenders this year, only 1 of them should trouble you. If you decide to do it next year let me know, might stick an entry in as well.

That's interesting and something to think about... I do a bit of marshalling so need a balance (off to Goodwood for 3 days this weekend!). Entering something like that series would make sense, even for a few events. And they go to Prescott.

Also, the targets show the wiscombe record is a 52.4 (pug 106), and I've done a 52.5. Track has been resurfaced since mind.

Im off to trial a set off Yokohama Prada spec 2's at Blyton this friday. They aren't as aggressive as AD08s but are much cheaper.

Another 2 class wins at Thoresby Park, that's 4 for 4. Never done that before, not been a lot of competition to be fair, other than 3 sisters. Yesterday and today was a Ford Ka, driver was a decent pedaller, but not a good car choice.

Drove home in torrential rain with lots of standing water on the motorway. The AD08s were fine, quite planted, although mine are quite new.

Car still in one piece, now destickered, and all evidence destroyed, daughter comes back tomorrow :)
