I have been told to buy a Fiat Panda 1.3 diesel but it must not have a diesel particulate filter. How do I find out if it has one or not please as when I ring up to enquire about a vehicle they don't know what I am talking about. Thank you, Jue150

No Panda Diesels currently have a DPF. Fiat managed to get the cars through the various emission regulations without one. This may change for future models.
Most Easterly, DPFs just add to the complexity of modern diesel-engined cars and tend to go wrong where fitted, particularly on vehicles that only do short journeys with the engine driven at low revs.

Yes they do. I've serviced some so I know they exist, and have very few problems. ;)

Engine version 169A1000 (75CV), starting from sometime in '06.

Easiest way to tell is to look for the red piece in the "multijet" badge on the boot (non-DPF diesels have a blue bit).

Thank you for correcting my ignorant and rigid thinking, Danny Boy. I think I got into this particular mindset because I was relieved to find that 4x4 Pandas with Diesel engines were all built without a DPF, which included my Cross. I had read the horror stories of DPF problems on cars that cover low mileages and, as I only do about 4,000 miles a year at present, didn't want such problems.
The 70HP MJs with engine number 188A8000 have no DPF, the 75HP cars with engine 169A1000 have a DPF and seem to have been built from 2007 onwards.
Strangely, there is barely any difference in on-road performance or fuel economy between the 70 and 75HP cars (excluding the 4x4, which is slower and thirstier).
I'm also glad to hear that the DPF rarely causes problems on the Panda. I suspect this is because the small MJ diesel engine works hard in the Panda, even on short journeys, and doesn't get the chance to become clogged up.

Ive just bought a 2008 model 2wd MJ registered in March 2008 and checked the engine number and it is definitely non DPF. It has a blue J in the Multijet on the back. So whats the score with the DPF models then? Did they make the non DPF and the DPF concurently? Or was there a post 2008 changeover date?

I have 2016 Panda Cross 1300 with a DPF. I have problems with filter clogging after I remain in town, no long trips. I would appreciate any suggesting as I have been paying 50 Euros each time the error engine picture light comes on. This is not the DPF light. The mechanic says if it ever does get too plugged it will cost 1000 euros to replace. Can I clean it myself as needed?

Hi.

You have a modern 2012+ panda

Better info is available in that section.

A computer software called
MultiECUScan can help encorage the technology within the car to clear its DPF.. oil quality is also important ;)

Fairly sure it was in 2009 that they brought out the Multijet 2, which was designed to meet Euro 5 emissions. Available in various power levels from 75hp to 95hp, DPF fitted.

However the earlier Multijet 1 was available in 70, 75 and 90hp variations....the 70hp was definitely non-dpf, but no idea about the other versions.
